Effects of pyrolysis temperature and aging treatment on the adsorption of Cd2+ and Zn2+ by coffee grounds biochar

Yuxin Ke et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of pyrolysis temperature and aging treatment on the adsorption performance of coffee grounds biochar (CGB) for Cd2+ and Zn2+. The results showed that the adsorption performance of fresh CGB increased with increasing pyrolysis temperature, while the adsorption performance of aged CGB peaked at medium pyrolysis temperature and decreased at higher temperatures. The XRD results indicated that the graphitization degree of CGB increased with pyrolysis temperature, leading to improved environmental stability. EDS and FTIR results suggested that ion-exchange and complexation played a dominant role in the adsorption processes, and the aging treatment improved the selectivity for Cd2+.

Summary: Cadmium pollution in soils is a significant problem for the environment and agriculture, affecting crop production, environmental quality, food safety, and human health. Biochar-based materials have emerged as potential solutions due to their multifunctional surface properties. The mechanisms involved in immobilizing cadmium include surface complexation, chemical reduction, precipitation, ion exchange, pi-pi interactions, hydrogen bonding, and adsorption. Factors such as biochar surface pore size, oxygen-containing functional groups, pyrolysis temperature, biochar feedstock, and soil characteristics influence these mechanisms.

Deciphering the Effectiveness of Humic Substances and Biochar Modified Digestates on Soil Quality and Plant Biomass Accumulation

Jiri Holatko et al.

Summary: The effective use of digestate as exogenous organic matter to enhance soil carbon sequestration depends on the balance between labile and recalcitrant organic carbon, which is influenced by the type of feedstock, the fermentation process, and the fraction (liquid, solid) of the fermented product used. This study investigates the effects of mixing digestate with organic carbon-rich supplements (biochar and Humac) to change the carbon ratio in the resulting fertilizer. The results show that mixing digestate with Humac improves short-term nutrient transformation and enhances maize biomass production. Adding biochar or a combination of biochar and Humac also enhances total carbon content, C:N ratio, short-term respiration activity, nitrification, and long-term nitrogen mineralization. The short-term positive effects of digestate + biochar (eventually + Humac) on catabolism were proven, while their long-term effects on nutrient mineralization were negative, which should be further researched in the future.
