Effects of contemporaneous orogenesis on sedimentation in the Late Cretaceous Western Interior Basin, northern Utah and southwestern Wyoming

Elizabeth M. Davis et al.

Summary: The study identifies three main drivers of subsidence in the Western Interior Basin: Mesozoic-early Cenozoic flexure linked to the Sevier Orogeny, Late Cretaceous-Eocene flexure associated with Laramide Uplifts, and Late Cretaceous dynamic subsidence. These factors impact basin geometry and stratigraphic architecture in the region.

Constraining the effects of dynamic topography on the development of Late Cretaceous Cordilleran foreland basin, western United States

Zhiyang Li et al.

Summary: Dynamic topography refers to the vertical deflection of the Earth's surface generated by mantle flow. In the North American Cordilleran foreland basin, dynamic subsidence is believed to be an important mechanism for subsidence and migration of depocenters, but its spatial and temporal scales are still unknown. By developing a high-resolution chronostratigraphic framework, this study reveals that dynamic subsidence influenced accommodation creation in the CFB starting from around 85 Ma, and subsidence migrated from the southwest to northeast. The study also indicates that dynamic subsidence was controlled by both flexural subsidence and dynamic subsidence during 75-66 Ma.

Tectonic and eustatic control of Mesaverde Group Wyoming-Utah-Colorado region, USA

Keith P. Minor et al.

Summary: By describing and analyzing the depositional history and stratigraphic architecture of the southern greater Green River basin of Wyoming, USA, and surrounding areas, we gained a better understanding of the interplay between tectonic and eustatic forces that shaped the stratigraphy. Our findings reveal the influence of both tectonic and eustatic forces on the formation of the stratigraphic units, highlighting the importance of studying the interaction between tectonic controls and sea-level changes.

Shoreline evolution in the Late Cretaceous North American Cordilleran foreland basin: An exemplar of the combined influence of tectonics, sea level, and sediment supply through time

Zhiyang Li et al.

Summary: The stratigraphic record from the North American Cordilleran foreland basin provides valuable insights into the formation and filling of foreland basins by integrating various geological processes. This study summarizes the complex shoreline evolution in the central part of the basin through paleogeographic maps, showing high-resolution shoreline history and distribution of depositional environments during the Late Cretaceous. The study highlights the importance of subcrustal processes, such as mantle flow, in influencing subsidence/uplift and sediment dispersal patterns in the basin.

PALEOCENE (65-63 AND 58.5 MA) MARINE FLOODING AND 62-60 MA SEDIMENT BYPASS IN SOUTHERN WYOMING, USA: IMPLICATIONS FOR LARAMIDE SEDIMENT FLUX TO THE GULF OF MEXICO

Anton F. -J. Wroblewski et al.

Summary: The study of ichnofossil assemblages in the Paleocene formations in Wyoming's Hanna Basin reveals unique sedimentary structures and marine fossils that provide significant revisions to the reconstructions of the Paleocene Western Interior Seaway. The presence of these fossils in different environments such as estuarine bars and tidal flats sheds light on the depositional environment and transgressions during this time period.

Investigating the formation of the Cretaceous Western Interior Seaway using landscape evolution simulations

Ching Chang et al.

Summary: Research suggests that dynamic subsidence was crucial to the formation of the Western Interior Seaway, with sediment distribution transitioning from flexural to dynamic subsidence around 90-84 million years ago. Additionally, simulations indicate that significant regional-scale Laramide uplift in the western United States likely occurred no earlier than the latest Cretaceous.

Earliest evidence of marine habitat use by mammals

Anton F. -J. Wroblewski et al.

Summary: This study presents incontrovertible ichnofossil evidence for the utilization of brackish-water habitats by at least two mammalian species in southern Wyoming during the late Paleocene (58 Ma). It provides the first recorded Paleocene mammal trackways in the United States and only the fourth documented in the world. The findings support recent molecular phylogenetic studies regarding the origin of Cetartiodactyla near the Cretaceous-Paleogene boundary.
