Characterization of atmospheric aerosols in the Antarctic region using Raman Spectroscopy and Scanning Electron Microscopy

Cesar Marina-Montes et al.

Summary: The non-destructive spectroscopic characterization of airborne particulate matter in the Antarctic region revealed the complex elemental and molecular composition of atmospheric aerosols at the particle level. Raman spectroscopy and Scanning Electron Microscopy with Energy-Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy techniques identified a variety of organic compounds, black carbon, exotic minerals, and natural PM in the samples collected from the surroundings of the Spanish Antarctic Research Station Gabriel de Castilla. The presence of microplastic fibers in the Antarctic air for the first time suggests the influence of anthropogenic activities even in pristine and remote regions.

Raman spectroscopy of anhydrous and hydrated aluminum sulfates: Experience from burning coal heaps

Filip Kosek et al.

Summary: Hydrated aluminum-rich sulfates are less common secondary minerals on Mars and their study in high-temperature environments is important for planetology and exobiology research. Raman spectroscopy is a powerful tool for distinguishing sulfates and tracking their hydration states. Field investigations and laboratory analysis revealed mixtures of anhydrous and hydrated sulfates, along with intermediate phases, and confirmed that the hydration degree of sulfates increases with decreasing temperature.

Convolutional Neural Networks as a Tool for Roman Spectral Mineral Classification Under Low Signal, Dusty Mars Conditions

Genesis Berlanga et al.

Summary: This study introduces a method for identifying common rock-forming silicate, carbonate, and sulfate minerals using a convolutional neural network (CNN) under Mars-like conditions with low signal-to-noise ratios. The CNN demonstrated high success rates in distinguishing between mineral endmembers and low-intensity Raman scatterers, showcasing the potential of big data machine learning in Raman spectral analysis for planetary science applications.

Particle size distribution and particulate matter concentrations during synoptic and convective dust events in West Texas

Karin Ardon-Dryer et al.

Summary: Dust events are an important and complex part of the atmospheric system. The frequency of dust events in the Southern High Plains of West Texas has increased in the past two decades, but their impact on air quality is still unclear. The lack of monitoring stations and information on different particle sizes and distributions has contributed to the uncertainty. Using the AEROS unit, researchers compared three different dust events and found that the impact of convective dust events on air quality is underestimated with the current hourly basis method.

Impact of Desert Dust Events on the Cardiovascular Disease: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Alberto Dominguez-Rodriguez et al.

Summary: Through a systematic review and meta-analysis, this study found that inhalation of desert dust significantly increases the risk of cardiovascular mortality, especially on the day of exposure and the following day. The results of the study show that exposure to every 10 mu g/m(3) of desert dust increases the risk of cardiovascular mortality by 2%.

Presence of Longitudinal Roll Structures during Synoptic Forced Conditions in Complex Terrain

Cory M. Payne et al.

Summary: The study investigated synoptic interactions with the San Andres Mountains in southern New Mexico using WRF model simulations. Two distinct regimes were identified: lee waves aloft and SW-to-NE oriented Longitudinal Roll Structures (LRS), with the transition occurring at a critical threshold of surface heating and upwind flow characteristics during the transitional periods. Satellite observations and longitudinal streak patterns in soil confirmed the climatological presence of LRS.

Quantifying the range of the dust direct radiative effect due to source mineralogy uncertainty

Longlei Li et al.

Summary: The large uncertainty in the mineral dust direct radiative effect is hindered by the uncertainties in surface soil mineralogical content. Shortwave DRE responds region-specifically depending on mineral speciation and surface albedo. Iron oxides play a disproportionately large impact on climate compared to their small fractional burden in the atmosphere.
