Serotonin transporter availability in physically aggressive personality disordered patients: associations with trait and state aggression, and response to fluoxetine

Daniel R. Rosell et al.

Summary: The aim of this study is to examine the association between regional serotonin transporter (5-HTT) availability and trait and state aggression, as well as response to the anti-aggressive effects of fluoxetine. The results showed that 5-HTT availability in the ACC and VST is associated with individual trait aggression, and this association is further clarified after adjusting for factors related to proactive and reactive aggression subtypes. State aggression in IED patients is positively correlated with ACC 5-HTT availability. Higher baseline VST 5-HTT binding predicts greater decreases in state aggression with fluoxetine treatment.

In vivo correlation of serotonin transporter and 1B receptor availability in the human brain: a PET study

Jonas E. Svensson et al.

Summary: This study provides the first in vivo evidence of the relationship between 5-HT1B receptors and serotonin transporters in the human brain. The findings suggest a potential therapeutic value in modulating 5-HT1B receptors to enhance the effects of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors.

The Modulatory Role of Serotonin on Human Impulsive Aggression

Sofi da Cunha-Bang et al.

Summary: The review presents the progress made in understanding the potential link between chronically low brain serotonin levels and impulsive aggression, as well as the effects of serotonin alterations on brain activity in regions involved in impulsive aggression. Evidence from in vivo molecular neuroimaging suggests associations between impulsive aggression and serotonin receptor binding, transporter levels, and monoamine oxidase A levels, indicating that low brain serotonin levels may be a neurobiological risk factor for impulsive aggressive behavior. Future studies should focus on assessing unique clinical features of impulsive aggression and investigating knowledge gaps to confirm, refute, or modify proposed models of impulsive aggression.
