Evaluation of the golden proportion in the natural dentition: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Jimmy Londono et al.

Summary: This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to evaluate the prevalence and suitability of the golden proportion in tooth width ratios among different populations. A total of 6 articles were included in the meta-analysis after a systematic search and assessment. The results showed that there is currently insufficient evidence to support the existence of the golden proportion in natural smiles, suggesting that the belief in the golden proportion in dentistry is a myth rather than a fact. However, modified percentages based on the golden percentage theory can still be applied in aesthetic dentistry.

Evaluation of golden percentage in natural maxillary anterior teeth width: A systematic review

Naseer Ahmed et al.

Summary: This systematic review investigated the quality and outcome of studies on maxillary anterior tooth proportion, and concluded that dental ratios should be based on racial and ethnic considerations rather than a standardized golden percentage.

Mathematical Tooth Proportions: A Systematic Review

Mohammed A. Akl et al.

Summary: This systematic review evaluated and compared the effectiveness of three mathematical formulas – golden proportion, golden percentage, and RED proportion – in predicting esthetic clinical outcomes. Results showed significant variation in tooth proportions in the natural dentition, with the mathematical formulas not providing consistent results to guide aesthetically pleasing smiles.

A simple method for quick evaluation of the anterior tooth ratio: an observational study

Guanning Zhang et al.

Summary: This study established a simple method for assessing the proportion of anterior teeth and identified the standard ratio value. The ratio of maxillary and mandibular lateral incisors can be used to estimate the anterior tooth ratio, which showed high reliability and efficiency in clinical practice.

The Analysis of Facio-Dental Proportions to Determine the Width of Maxillary Anterior Teeth: A Clinical Study

Naseer Ahmed et al.

Summary: The study aimed to analyze the relationship between mid horizontal facial third proportions and maxillary anterior teeth width, and to determine the teeth width using different proportions. The results showed no significant relationship between the facial proportions and teeth width without modification. However, after modification, there was some correlation between the modified facial proportions and teeth width, with the results modified using Preston and 70% recurrent esthetic dental proportion found to be unreliable.

A 2D Photographic and 3D Digital Dental Model Analysis of Golden Percentage in Maxillary Anterior Teeth

Naseer Ahmed et al.

Summary: The study did not find golden percentage values in natural maxillary anterior teeth, suggesting that regional values should be considered instead of golden percentage for restoration of maxillary anterior teeth.

Analysis of dental esthetic proportions in a Spanish population sample

Samuel Rodriguez-Lopez et al.

Summary: The study found differences in compliance of anterior maxillary teeth with various dental esthetic proportions in a Spanish population sample, with GP, RED, GPG, and Preston's proportion standards not being met, but the MGPG standard being more applicable for treatments seeking a natural smile.

Golden Standard and Golden Proportion of Maxillary Anterior Teeth Among Saudi Population in Makkah

Mohamed Fattouh Abdallah et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the occurrence of golden standard (GS) and golden proportion (GP) of maxillary anterior teeth among the Saudi population in Makkah, finding that GS was more prevalent than other golden measures, while GP had a low frequency. The study also highlighted differences in GS and GP among gender, race, and face shape.
