Dense 1,2,4,5-tetramethylimidazolium- functionlized anion exchange membranes based on poly(aryl ether sulfone)s with high alkaline stability for water electrolysis

Jiafeng Qian et al.

Summary: In this study, anion exchange membranes (PAES-TMI-x) with dense 1,2,4,5-tetramethylimidazolium side chains were prepared and characterized for water electrolysis. These membranes exhibited high alkaline stability and ionic conductivity, making them suitable for efficient water electrolysis.

Synthesis and properties of anion exchange membranes with dense multi-cations and flexible side chains for water electrolysis

Jiafeng Qian et al.

Summary: A class of poly (aryl ether sulfone)s with multiple quaternary ammonium cations on the side chains (PAES-MQA-x) were designed and synthesized for improving the performance of anion exchange membranes (AEMs) in water electrolysis. The PAES-MQA-x membranes exhibited a high ion exchange capacity, good water uptake, and high ionic conductivity. The electrolyzer with PAES-MQA-0.18 showed a high current density and good operational stability.

Proton exchange membranes containing densely alkyl sulfide sulfonated side chains for vanadium redox flow battery

Shiju Cai et al.

Summary: A series of poly(aryl ether sulfone)s containing eight alkyl sulfide sulfonated side chains were designed and synthesized to improve the performance of aromatic sulfonated proton exchange membrane in vanadium redox flow battery. These membranes showed excellent ionic conductivity, moderate water uptake, and good dimensional stability.

Enhancing the durability of hydrocarbon-membrane-based polymer electrolyte water electrolysis using a radical scavenger-embedded interlocking interfacial layer

Sungyu Choi et al.

Summary: The study introduces a radical-scavenger-embedded interlocking interfacial layer (IIL) to address delamination issue between hydrocarbon membranes and Nafion-based catalyst layers. The ball-socket joint structure of the IIL enables mechanical interlocking at the interface, with cerium oxide acting as a radical scavenger to prevent hydrothermal degradation of the IIL. The IIL-based PEMWE system operates for more than 500 hours with lower polarization compared to state-of-the-art hydrocarbon-based and Nafion-based PEMWE systems, marking an important milestone for cost-effective PEMWE system development.

High-performance multiblock PEMs containing a highly acidic fluorinated-hydrophilic domain for water electrolysis

Ji Eon Chae et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the design and evaluation of novel hydrophilic-hydrophobic poly(arylene ether sulfone) multiblock copolymers for their synergistic effects upon transport properties in proton exchange membrane water electrolysis. By adjusting the proportions of hydrophilic and hydrophobic segments, the multiblock copolymer with a higher proportion of hydrophilic segments showed enhanced performance due to the greater continuity of nano-sized ionic channels.

Ion exchange capacity controlled biphenol-based sulfonated poly(arylene ether sulfone) for polymer electrolyte membrane water electrolyzers: Comparison of random and multi-block copolymers

Song-Yi Han et al.

Summary: The possibility of using hydrocarbon-based sulfonated polymers as alternatives to PFSA membranes was studied, and it was found that random BPSH membranes showed better performance in terms of hydrogen permeability and proton to hydrogen selectivity. The best performing random BPSH membrane exhibited better performance compared to Nafion 212, but had a higher degradation rate in an accelerated stress test.
