Repair of aromatic hydrocarbon-based membranes tested under accelerated fuel cell conditions

Tym de Wild et al.

Summary: Hydrocarbon-based materials, commonly used as next-generation proton exchange membranes (PEMs) for polymer electrolyte fuel cells (PEFCs), suffer from radical induced degradation reactions due to aromatic groups contained within the polymer. This study focuses on repairing the damaged membranes by incorporating cerium(III) as a repair agent. The results indicate that the degradation of the polymer during fuel cell operation can be significantly reduced by immobilizing cerium(III) in the membrane.

Simultaneous improvement of proton conductivity and chemical stability of Nafion membranes via embedment of surface-modified ceria nanoparticles in membrane surface

Vu Dong Thuc et al.

Summary: Lab-synthesized ceria nanoparticles were surface-modified for proton conductivity, and embedded into Nafion membranes to enhance chemical stability and proton conductivity. The sandwiched structure membrane showed significantly improved durability and cell performance, with a maximum power density of 522 mW cm(-2), surpassing that of pristine and single-layer composite membranes.

Hydrothermal and Co-Precipitated Synthesis of Chalcopyrite for Fenton-like Degradation toward Rhodamine B

Po-Yu Wen et al.

Summary: In this study, H-CuFeS2 samples were successfully prepared and characterized. The results showed that H-CuFeS2 samples exhibited excellent degradation performance towards RhB in the presence of Na2S2O8. Through free radical trapping experiment and iodometric titration, the major active species involved in RhB degradation and the amount of SO4·- radicals produced from the prepared samples were determined. Furthermore, a possible degradation mechanism was proposed. Finally, H-CuFeS2 samples demonstrated outstanding degradation performance in different environmental water samples.

Potential Application of Macrocyclic Compounds for Selective Recovery of Rare Earth Scandium Elements from Aqueous Media

Ali Dawood Salman et al.

Summary: This study explores the use of novel extractants, including 15-crown-5, 12-crown-4, cryptand 2.2.2, and DC18-crown-6, to separate and recover scandium from aqueous media. The results show high selectivity for scandium in 15-crown-5, 12-crown-4, and cryptand 2.2.2, making them valuable in the processing industry of rare earth elements. The pH value of the aqueous solution significantly affects the extraction efficiency and selectivity.

Systematic investigation of methods to suppress membrane plasticization during CO2 permeation at supercritical conditions

Menno Houben et al.

Summary: This study investigates the suppression of CO2-induced plasticization in polyimide membranes under supercritical conditions. Three methods (polymer blending, thermal treatments, and chemical crosslinking) known from low-pressure applications are applied and their effectiveness in suppressing membrane plasticization at high CO2 pressures is identified. Chemical and thermo-oxidative crosslinking provides the highest resistance to plasticization but also lowers permeability, while thermal treatments in N-2 retain high permeability with significant plasticization resistance. Polymer blending increases plasticization resistance but strongly reduces permeability. Crosslinking offers superior plasticization resistance, but tailored strategies are needed to balance this with permeability.

Enhanced chemical durability of polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells by crown ether grafted carbon nanotube

Keun-Hwan Oh et al.

Summary: In this study, a double anchoring strategy was used to introduce cerium-ion into the catalyst layer, aiming to enhance the chemical stability of polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells. The experimental results demonstrated that the doubly anchored cerium-ion had a significant effect on maintaining open circuit voltage and performance retention.
