Research progress of functional composite electromagnetic shielding materials

Haiwei Zhang et al.

Summary: With the rapid development of electronic information technology, there is a growing concern about the adverse effects of electromagnetic waves on the environment and human health. To address this issue, composite EMI shielding materials have gained attention. This review examines the effects of different fillers and forms on the properties of EMI shielding materials and discusses the functional characteristics of these materials. Compared with traditional EMI shielding materials, composite materials not only provide excellent EMI shielding performance but also possess special functionalities to withstand external adverse factors, prolong service life, and enhance durability. The main challenges and prospects for future research are also outlined.

Flexible MXene/aramid nanofiber nanocomposite film with high thermal conductivity and flame retardancy

Yingjie Zhan et al.

Summary: A feasible technology for fabricating flexible, high-strength, and multifunctional thermal management materials is proposed using MXene nanosheets and aramid nanofibers. The addition of MXene nanosheets improves the thermal conductivity and mechanical properties of the composite films, while also reducing heat release and toxic gas generation. The one-step gelation technique shows great potential as a flexible flame-retardant thermal management material.

Physico-mechanical, thermo-mechanical, and biodegradation properties of unidirectional green-composites from nettle (Girardinia diversifolia) yarn preform and poly(lactic acid) fibreweb

Parna Nandi et al.

Summary: A series of nettle/PLA unidirectional green composites were prepared and evaluated for their physical, mechanical, thermal, and biodegradation properties for automotive dashboard and door panel applications. The biocomposites showed an initial increase and subsequent decrease in mechanical properties with increasing preform content. The biocomposite with an equal weight fraction of nettle yarn preform and PLA demonstrated the highest tensile strength, flexural strength, impact strength, and tensile modulus. It also exhibited excellent thermal stability and biodegradability. Overall, the biocomposite showed great potential for automotive applications.

Dependence of the Dynamic Mechanical Properties and Structure of Polyurethane-Clay Nanocomposites on the Weight Fraction of Clay

Shirley Peng et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effect of clay and chemical cross-linking on the dynamic mechanical properties of polyurethane reinforced with different concentrations of organically modified montmorillonite clay. The results show that the clay concentration affects the glass transition temperature of the nanocomposites, with the higher-temperature transition temperature increasing and the low-temperature transition temperature decreasing with increasing clay concentration. Additionally, increasing the clay content increases the crosslink density of the nanocomposites.

Mechanical reinforcement and memory effect of strain-induced soft segment crystals in thermoplastic polyurethane-urea elastomers

Nicolas Candau et al.

Summary: The study showed that mechanical hardening of the amorphous poly(urethane-urea) copolymer is attributed to strain induced crystallization of the PEO soft segments, resulting in mechanically stable crystals. This enhanced stability is related to superstraining of the Soft Segment (SS) crystallites and Hard Segment (HS) reorganization upon deformation.

Recent progress on carbon-based composite materials for microwave electromagnetic interference shielding

Rajesh Kumar et al.

Summary: The demand for electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding has risen significantly due to rapid developments in the electronics industry. New materials like carbon-based nanostructures, polymers, and MXene-based 2D layered materials are being explored as alternatives to conventional metal sheets for EMI shielding, offering advantages such as low weight, cost-effectiveness, and good thermal/electrical properties. Composite materials combining polymers with conducting carbon fillers have potential as EM wave absorbers, while MXene-based materials have garnered attention for their application in EMI shielding.

The effect of mixed soft segment on the microstructure of thermoplastic polyurethane

Yongyin Cui et al.

Summary: In this study, the hard segment content was fixed and thermoplastic polyurethane elastomers with one-soft segment and bi-soft segment were synthesized and characterized. The results indicated that introducing PCL was more effective than PTMG in promoting microphase mixing and crystallization, and reducing microphase separation, due to the stronger carbonyl group in PCL forming hydrogen bonds with -NH bond. Additionally, PCL-HPU showed significantly improved tensile strength and elongation at break, with good retention of IPA resistance compared to other formulations.
