Starch, cellulose, pectin, gum, alginate, chitin and chitosan derived (nano) materials for sustainable water treatment: A review

Mahmoud Nasrollahzadeh et al.

Summary: Natural biopolymers, such as cellulose, chitin/chitosan, and starch, are considered greener, sustainable, and eco-friendly materials due to their outstanding structural features, abundant availability, nontoxicity, and biocompatibility. In recent years, polysaccharides have been widely used for making various catalysts, with polysaccharides-supported metal/metal oxide materials being an effective strategy in nanotechnology. Polysaccharides adorned with nanomaterials have shown promising potential as efficient catalysts or sorbents in removing a variety of aqueous pollutants and contaminants.

Biodegradable polymers and their nano-composites for the removal of endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) from wastewater: A review

Miral Al Sharabati et al.

Summary: Endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) interfere with natural hormones in the endocrine system, leading to adverse effects on human and animal health, making their removal from wastewater vital. Adsorption has been proposed as a promising method for EDC removal, with biodegradable polymers showing potential as effective adsorbents. The use of natural and synthetic biodegradable polymers for EDC removal in wastewater treatment is still limited, but holds promise for future exploration in sustainable adsorbents.

Biodegradable polycaprolactone/MXene nanocomposite nanofiltration membranes for the treatment of dye solutions

Mohammad Hassan Abbasi Geravand et al.

Summary: This study successfully prepared a new environmentally-friendly membrane modified with hydrophilic MXene nanosheets, which exhibited high hydrophilicity and biodegradability. Membranes loaded with different amounts of MXene showed improved tensile properties and higher pure water permeance. Additionally, these membranes also demonstrated a high rejection rate for dyes.

The Role of Interfacial Adhesion in Polymer Composites Engineered from Lignocellulosic Agricultural Waste

David Kun et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effect of physical contact between filler particles on the modulus of composite materials by incorporating different types of milled sunflower husk into various polymer composites. The results showed that weak van der Waals interactions at the interface between polyolefins and sunflower husk particles led to poor adhesion and reinforcement in their composites. Enhanced interfacial adhesion was observed in specific interactions such as pi electron interactions for PS, hydrogen bonds for PLA, and a combination of both for PETG-based composites.
