Pseudospin topological phase transition induced by rotation operation in two-dimensional dielectric photonic crystal with C6 symmetry

Wenjie Sui et al.

Summary: We constructed a two-dimensional photonic crystal with a special structure and realized a topological phase transition by manipulating the rotation of its rod elements. Helical edge states were constructed along the interface. Numerical results and simulations demonstrated the topological protection and robustness of the system.

Glide-reflection symmetric phononic crystal interface: variation on a theme

Vincent Laude et al.

Summary: Nodal points can be synthesized at crystal interfaces using glide-reflection symmetries. In a square-lattice phononic crystal, the nodal point was previously observed at the X point, but in this study, it is shown that by considering quarter-lattice-constant glide-reflection symmetry, the nodal point can be moved to the Gamma point. Continuous grading along the x-axis does not significantly affect the band structure, allowing topological interface waves to survive even when glide-reflection symmetry is locally valid.

Observation of strong backscattering in valley-Hall photonic topological interface modes

Christian Anker Rosiek et al.

Summary: This study investigates the practical value of topological protection in reciprocal photonics. Measurements of propagation losses in valley-Hall topological waveguides in the slow-light regime show no evidence of topological protection against backscattering on structural defects. Light's unique properties support the development of photonic quantum technologies, optical interconnects, and novel sensors, but losses due to absorption or backscattering are a key limitation.

Higher-Order Topological States in Thermal Diffusion

Haotian Wu et al.

Summary: Unlike conventional topological materials, higher-order topological materials support topological states at boundaries of boundaries. This study reports the experimental realization of a higher-order thermal topological insulator in a generalized 2D diffusion lattice. The topological corner states for thermal diffusion were observed in the bandgap of diffusion rate, and their stability was demonstrated in the presence of amorphous deformation. This work opens the door for future thermal management with topological protection beyond 1D geometries.

Circuit realization of M & ouml;bius insulators

Shuo Bao et al.

Summary: With the rapid development of topological circuits, it is now possible to explore the characteristics of various topological insulators as an independent platform. In this study, we propose using circuit systems to realize Mobius insulators and enrich their algebraic structure in a projective way. Through the circuit, we can observe the energy distribution and dispersion along the edge of the entire model, as well as the effect of different defects on the edge energy distribution. This research deepens our understanding of topological physical phenomena caused by projective symmetry and advances the application of circuits in topological insulator research.

Broadside Radiation From Chern Photonic Topological Insulators

Zhixia Xu et al.

Summary: This work investigates the broadside radiation of Chern photonic topological insulators (PTIs) and the immunity mechanism to defects. Design guidelines are presented based on the calculation of Berry curvature and Chern number to design topological edge modes, and a leaky-wave antenna is proposed to achieve efficient broadside radiation. Experimental results demonstrate that leakage of the topological edge mode enables the generation of steerable beams across the broadside direction. The study provides important insights into achieving broadside radiation and understanding the robustness of PTIs in terms of antennas.

Topological Flat Bands in Self-Complementary Plasmonic Metasurfaces

Zhixia Xu et al.

Summary: This study reports the experimental realization of flat bands with nontrivial topology in a self-complementary plasmonic metasurface, and the observation of topological edge states. Experimentally, it is found that compact localized states in the nontrivial flat band enhance the wave-matter interactions.

Topological waves guided by a glide-reflection symmetric crystal interface

Julio Andres Iglesias Martinez et al.

Summary: A domain wall between different topological phases can support backscattering-immune guided wave propagation. Introduction of a glide-symmetric dislocation in a 2D crystal can generate wide-bandwidth, single-mode, and symmetry-protected guided waves. The change in the 2D Zak phase on either side of the interface provides a topological invariant protected by glide-reflection symmetry.

Near-field chiral excitation of universal spin-momentum locking transport of edge waves in microwave metamaterials

Zhixia Xu et al.

Summary: Controlling energy flow in waveguides is crucial for integrated devices across radio frequencies to optical bands. In this study, a broadband near-field chiral source is designed in the microwave band to visualize spin-momentum locking in different metamaterial waveguides. The research focuses on the development of experimental technology and provides insights for designing controllable spin-sorting devices in the microwave band.

Line Waves Existing at Junctions of Dual-Impedance Metasurfaces

Zhixia Xu et al.

Summary: Line waves are special electromagnetic modes supported on junctions of different metasurfaces, with tightly confined edge modes and high efficiency propagation capabilities. By tuning the properties of metasurfaces, broadband line waves can be tailored with customized dispersion. A simplified semianalytical model can be used to study the spin-momentum locking properties of line waves.
