Formation of Complex Organic Molecules in Hot Molecular Cores through Nondiffusive Grain-surface and Ice-mantle Chemistry

Robin T. Garrod et al.

Summary: A new, comprehensive model of gas-grain chemistry in hot molecular cores is introduced, incorporating both nondiffusive and diffusive reactions to accurately reproduce the abundances of various molecules. The model identifies the temperature range and production mechanisms of complex organic molecules (COMs), with the nondiffusive chemistry playing a significant role in the early formation of COMs. New surface/ice reactions involving CH and CH2 are found to contribute substantially to COM formation.

Thermal Desorption of Interstellar Ices: A Review on the Controlling Parameters and Their Implications from Snowlines to Chemical Complexity

Marco Minissale et al.

Summary: The evolution and thermal balance of star-forming regions are influenced by their chemical composition. Understanding the transition between the gas phase and the solid state, including the adsorption and desorption of icy dust grains, is essential for interpreting astrophysical observations of cold environments. Adsorbed atoms and molecules can also undergo efficient chemical reactions that are not seen in the gas phase. Therefore, accurately determining the physical properties of atoms and molecules interacting with dust grain particles is crucial for interpreting astronomical observations and building realistic astrochemical models.

Synthetic Approaches to Complex Organic Molecules in the Cold Interstellar Medium

Eric Herbst et al.

Summary: The observation and synthesis of organic molecules in interstellar space is an exciting and rapidly growing field in astrochemistry. Spectroscopic observations have detected over 250 molecules in interstellar clouds. This review focuses on the various explanations for the formation of complex organic molecules in the low-temperature interstellar medium. Gas-phase and granular processes are both believed to play a role, but the dominant mechanisms at such low temperatures are still disputed.

Interstellar detection and chemical modeling of iso-propanol and its normal isomer

A. Belloche et al.

Summary: The detection of iso-propanol and normal propanol in the hot molecular core Sgr B2(N2) indicates that the preference for the normal form of similarly sized interstellar molecules may be a general feature. Detecting other interstellar organic molecules with functional groups attached to primary or secondary carbon atoms can help determine the dominant processes that determine their normal-to-iso ratios.

Conformer-Selective Adsorption of 1-Propanol on the Ag(111)Surface

Ravi Ranjan et al.

Summary: In this study, the reflection absorption infrared spectra (RAIRS) of 1-propanol on the Ag(111) surface were simulated using density functional theory calculations. The results were compared to the corresponding experimental spectra, indicating that 1-propanol adsorbs as one specific conformer on the surface.

Exploitation of Synchrotron Radiation Photoionization Mass Spectrometry in the Analysis of Complex Organics in Interstellar Model Ices

Cheng Zhu et al.

Summary: Investigating the generation of complex organic molecules on interstellar nanoparticles is crucial for understanding astrochemical reaction networks and the evolution of molecular clouds and star-forming regions. The formation of these molecules has been linked to the irradiation of interstellar ices by ultraviolet photons and cosmic rays. In this study, synchrotron vacuum ultraviolet photoionization reflectron time-of-flight mass spectrometry (SVUV-PI-ReTOF-MS) was used to selectively identify key complex organic molecules based on their photoionization efficiency curves. The results demonstrate the versatility and effectiveness of this approach in comprehensively identifying complex organics produced in space simulation experiments.

K. M. Yocum et al.

Summary: Submillimeter/far-IR spectroscopy was used to detect and quantify organic molecules sublimated from methanol ice after ultraviolet photolysis and warm-up. A total of eleven sublimated photoproducts were identified, with additional products detected by FTIR spectroscopy. Rotational temperatures and gas densities were calculated for organics with multiple C atoms, and abundance ratios were compared with observations in different astronomical objects.
