Can photocatalysis help in the fight against COVID-19 pandemic?

Agata Markowska-Szczupak et al.

Summary: Mould fungi pose serious threats to humans and animals, and may be the main cause of COVID-19-associated pulmonary aspergillosis. Common disinfection methods are not effective against fungi due to their high resistance. Photocatalysis has attracted attention for its antimicrobial properties, and titania photocatalysts have been used in various applications. This study presents the efficiency of photocatalytic methods in removing fungi and bacteria, which are risk factors for SARS-CoV-2 co-infection, and suggests that photocatalysis may help prevent the severity of the COVID-19 pandemic.

How do bubbles affect light absorption in photoelectrodes for solar water splitting?

Abhinav Bhanawat et al.

Summary: This paper systematically investigates the effect of gas bubble formation on the performance of a horizontal photoelectrode during photoelectrochemical water splitting. The presence of hydrogen or oxygen gas bubbles increases back-scattering losses, resulting in a decrease in photocurrent density. The normal-hemispherical reflectance of the photoelectrode is found to be independent of the bubble diameter and size distribution, but significantly varies with the bubble contact angle and projected surface area coverage. The area-averaged absorptance in a bubble-covered photoelectrode reduces by up to 18% compared to a bare photoelectrode. Hydrophilic photoelectrodes or coatings can improve the performance of large photoelectrodes.

Size and Coverage Effects of Ni and Pt Co-Catalysts in the Photocatalytic Hydrogen Evolution from Methanol on TiO2(110)

Moritz Eder et al.

Summary: In the past decade, photocatalytic hydrogen evolution from metal-loaded TiO2 has received significant attention. This study compares size-selected Ni and Pt clusters as co-catalysts on a TiO2(110) single crystal and investigates the size- and coverage-dependent effects on the catalyst performance. Larger clusters and higher coverages of Ni enhance the product formation rate, while Pt co-catalysts exhibit a stable and higher activity, but size-specific effects need to be considered.

Photocatalytic solar hydrogen production from water on a 100-m2 scale

Hiroshi Nishiyama et al.

Summary: Hydrogen, as an energy carrier, can be obtained through photocatalysis and electrolysis, making it a carbon-neutral energy source. While photocatalytic water splitting efficiency is low, large-scale safe production and collection of hydrogen is feasible. The essential next steps for economic viability and practical use are reactor and process optimization to reduce costs and improve efficiency and stability.
