Shape-Dependent CO2 Hydrogenation to Methanol over Cu2O Nanocubes Supported on ZnO

David Kordus et al.

Summary: The surface composition and catalyst structure of Cu/ZnO-based catalysts play a crucial role in the hydrogenation of CO2 to methanol. The study investigates the effect of pre-catalyst shape (cubic vs spherical) on the activity and selectivity of ZnO-supported Cu nanoparticles during methanol synthesis. Experimental techniques and density functional theory calculations were used to understand the changes in morphology and composition of the shaped pre-catalysts, as well as their subsequent transformation and activity/selectivity trends under reaction conditions.

Revealing the Role of CO during CO2 Hydrogenation on Cu Surfaces with In Situ Soft X-Ray Spectroscopy

Jack E. N. Swallow et al.

Summary: The reactions of H-2, CO2, and CO gas mixtures on the surface of Cu at 200 ? were investigated using AP-XPS and AtmP-NEXAFS spectroscopy. The order of gas dosing plays a crucial role in the catalyst chemical state, with metallic Cu preserved when H-2 is introduced before CO2. The addition of CO is essential for removing adsorbed oxygen and activating CO2 on the Cu surface, facilitating methanol synthesis.

Atomically Thick Oxide Overcoating Stimulates Low-Temperature Reactive Metal-Support Interactions for Enhanced Catalysis

Xinyu Liu et al.

Summary: Reactive metal-support interactions (RMSIs) can be initiated at a much lower temperature by using an atomically thick Ga2O3 coating of Pd nanoparticles. This leads to the formation of rarely reported Ga-rich PdGa alloy phases, which significantly enhance the catalytic activity in CO2 hydrogenation reaction. In situ infrared spectroscopy reveals that the Ga-rich phases favor formate formation and its subsequent hydrogenation, resulting in high productivity.

Tuning the CO2 Hydrogenation Selectivity of Rhodium Single-Atom Catalysts on Zirconium Dioxide with Alkali Ions

Shang Li et al.

Summary: Tuning the coordination environments of metal single atoms in single-atom catalysts have significant impacts on catalytic activity and stability. However, the selectivity in thermocatalysis is often hardly affected. This study demonstrates that simultaneous regulation of both Rh-1 atoms and ZrO2 support with alkali ions enables efficient switching of reaction products in CO2 hydrogenation, leading to exclusive CO formation.

CO2-Activation by size-selected tantalum cluster cations (Ta1-16+): thermalization governing reaction selectivity

Nikita Levin et al.

Summary: The reactions of tantalum cluster cations of different sizes with carbon dioxide were studied, revealing two different pathways: oxide formation and the pickup of an entire molecule. Changes in the branching ratios at a particular cluster size were found to be related to the vibrational heat capacity of the clusters and the exothermicity of the reaction, as supported by thermochemistry calculations.

Pyrolysis of mass-selected (V2O5)NO- (N=1-6) clusters in a high-temperature linear ion trap reactor

Man Ruan et al.

Summary: A high-temperature linear ion trap was designed and installed into a homemade reflectron time-of-flight mass spectrometer for studying the pyrolysis behavior of (V2O5)(N)O- cluster anions. The dissociation channels were clarified, and the branching ratios were found to vary with cluster size. The decomposition behavior of vanadium oxide clusters provides insights into the pyrolysis mechanism of metal oxide nanoparticles.

Rational Design of Bimetallic Metal Chalcogenide Clusters for CO2 Dissociation

Turbasu Sengupta et al.

Summary: Using first-principles calculations, we found that the dissociation barriers of CO2 on mixed transition metal chalcogenide clusters are relatively lower compared to pure and ligated clusters. The Cu3W3Se8 cluster exhibited the lowest barrier of 0.41 eV, attributed to the charge transfer from Cu to W sites and the alteration of CO2 binding energy to charged W sites.

Ti-doped CeO2 Stabilized Single-Atom Rhodium Catalyst for Selective and Stable CO2 Hydrogenation to Ethanol

Ke Zheng et al.

Summary: In this study, a single-atom catalyst consisting of monoatomic Rh embedded onto Ti-doped CeO2 support was developed for CO2 hydrogenation into ethanol. The catalyst exhibited high ethanol selectivity, record-breaking turnover frequency, and outstanding stability. The synergistic effects of Ti-doping and monoatomic Rh contributed to the excellent catalytic performance.

Recent Progress in Thermal Conversion of CO2 via Single-Atom Site Catalysis

Qishun Wang et al.

Summary: CO2 emissions are a global concern, and converting CO2 into value-added products has great potential in industry. Research on single-atom site catalysis has become increasingly systematic, aiming to understand the structure-performance relationship of catalysts in CO2 activation. However, there is still much to be learned about the synthetic procedure and reaction pathway, requiring further efforts.

Synthesis of C2+ Chemicals from CO2 and H2 via C-C Bond Formation

Bernard Baffour Asare Bediako et al.

Summary: Researchers have discovered new methods for synthesizing acetic acid from methanol, CO2, and H-2, as well as for producing C3+ carboxylic acids using ethers, CO2, and H-2. They have also developed a series of catalysts to enhance the production of C2+ alcohols through CO2 hydrogenation and various routes for ethanol production. In addition, they have designed a catalyst capable of directly hydrogenating CO2 to C5+ hydrocarbons and proposed a coupled route involving homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysis.
