Following Adsorbed Intermediates on a Platinum Gas Diffusion Electrode in H3PO3-Containing Electrolytes Using In Situ X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy

Bruna F. Gomes et al.

Summary: One of the challenges of high-temperature polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells is the poisoning of the Pt catalyst with H3PO4. In this study, researchers investigated the poisoning effect of both H3PO3 and H3PO4 on Pt catalyst using in situ X-ray absorption spectroscopy. They found that H3PO4 adsorbs on the Pt catalyst surface, blocking the active sites, and H3PO3 has a higher affinity towards adsorption on Pt surfaces. The competition between H3PO4 and H3PO3 adsorption was studied to understand the catalyst poisoning mechanism and develop strategies to mitigate this phenomenon in the future.

Monitoring the Sodiation Mechanism of Anatase TiO2 Nanoparticle-Based Electrodes for Sodium-Ion Batteries by Operando XANES Measurements

Andreas Siebert et al.

Summary: This study utilizes operando X-ray absorption near-edge structure spectroscopy (XANES) to investigate the sodium insertion and extraction process in anatase TiO2 nanoparticles, revealing the reversible and irreversible sodium insertion as well as the change in titanium coordination. These results provide crucial insights for a more comprehensive understanding of the sodiation mechanism of TiO2-based anodes under realistic operating conditions.

Spectroscopic analysis with tender X-rays: SpAnTeX, a new AP-HAXPES end-station at BESSY II

Marco Favaro et al.

Summary: The newly developed end-station at BESSY II, SpAnTeX, offers high electron transmission and detection efficiency under gas pressures up to 30 mbar and photon energies ranging between 200 eV and 10 keV. It enables collection of the photoelectron spatial distribution with resolution better than 30 μm and the possibility to perform time resolved studies. The endstation can be used for experiments on solid/liquid interfaces, with good electrochemical performance and wide pressure and photon energy range coverage.

New Insights into the High-Performance Black Phosphorus Anode for Lithium-Ion Batteries

Minsi Li et al.

Summary: The study presents a high-performance nanostructured BP/G/CNTs composite synthesized using ball-milling method, which shows a high initial capacity of 1375 mA h g(-1) at 0.15 A g(-1) and maintains 1031.7 mA h g(-1) after 450 cycles. Moreover, the electrochemical mechanism of BP anodes with three-step lithiation and delithiation is experimentally revealed for the first time, along with evidence of an open-circuit relaxation effect of the electrode.
