Local Photochemical Nanoscopy of Hot-Carrier-Driven Catalytic Reactions Using Plasmonic Nanosystems

Olivier Henrotte et al.

Summary: The investigation of photocatalytic systems at the nanoscale is crucial for understanding their fundamental principles, improving their design, and enhancing their applicability. A photochemical nanoscopy technique has been developed to detect the molecular products of plasmonic hot-carrier-driven photocatalytic reactions with nanometric precision. Applying this methodology to Au/TiO2 plasmonic photocatalysts, it was discovered that smaller and denser Au nanoparticle arrays have lower optical contribution but higher quantum efficiency in hot-hole-driven photocatalysis, which is closely related to population heterogeneity. This study also revealed the areas of oxidation and reduction product evolution in a single plasmonic nanodiode, demonstrating the bipolar behavior of such nanosystems. These findings enable quantitative investigations at the nanoscale to evaluate the photocatalytic reactivity of low-dimensional materials in various chemical reactions.

Interpretation of Oxygen 1s X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy of ZnO

Terry J. J. Frankcombe et al.

Summary: X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) is widely used to determine the chemical and electronic states of atoms within a material. This study uses density functional theory to calculate the binding energies of O 1s electrons and provides a new explanation for the 531 eV binding energy feature in metal oxides. The findings clarify the interpretation of XPS data and enable a better understanding of the oxygen states in materials.

Photophysical Study of Electron and Hole Trapping in TiO2 and TiO2/ Au Nanoparticles through a Selective Electron Injection

Xianshao Zou et al.

Summary: This study investigates the trapping of electrons and holes in TiO2 and finds that the behavior of electrons and holes is influenced by band bending and surface trap filling effects, resulting in longer decay time for electrons and slower trapping of holes. Additionally, plasmon-assisted electron injection is used to distinguish the behaviors of electrons and holes and reveals the intrinsic bulk trapping characteristics in different time ranges.

Defect engineering over anisotropic brookite toward substrate-specific photo-oxidation of alcohols

S. M. Hossein Hejazi et al.

Summary: A new approach for designing efficient photocatalysts with substrate-specific reactivity is presented. This approach can enhance the oxidation rate of alcohols and has lower oxidation rates for unrelated substrates. The study also reveals a close relationship between substrate-specific alcohol oxidation and hydrogen evolution reactions.

Defect Engineering in Photocatalysts and Photoelectrodes: From Small to Big

Zhiliang Wang et al.

Summary: Green hydrogen is a crucial clean energy carrier in addressing climate change, but the efficiency of solar-driven water splitting for hydrogen production is still insufficient. Defect engineering, which affects the properties of photocatalysts and photo-electrodes, is an effective strategy. This article provides an overview of defect engineering, including the creation of vacancies, lattice distortion, and surface defects. The identification, characterization, and interaction of defects are discussed, along with the need for precise synthesis and reliable techniques. A comprehensive understanding of defects is necessary for efficient solar-driven hydrogen generation.
