In Operando FTIR Study on the Effect of Sulfur Chain Length in Sulfur Copolymer-Based Li-S Batteries

Ayda Rafie et al.

Summary: The synthesis of sulfur-rich copolymers using inverse vulcanization reaction is a practical approach to enhance the stability of sulfur active material in Li-S batteries. In this study, we investigated the electrochemical behavior of sulfur-rich copolymers using in operando FTIR spectroscopy. The results showed that the C-S bond in sulfur copolymers is inactive in the voltage range of Li-S batteries. Additionally, the behavior of the copolymers changed significantly with the increase in monomer weight percentage and decrease in sulfur weight percentage.

A review on the use of carbonate-based electrolytes in Li-S batteries: A comprehensive approach enabling solid-solid direct conversion reaction

Ayda Rafie et al.

Summary: Li-S batteries with high theoretical capacity and energy density have attracted great attention, but the use of carbonate-based electrolytes has been overlooked. This review presents recent progress on the use of carbonate-based electrolytes in Li-S batteries, discussing approaches to mitigate the irreversible reaction between carbonate solvents and sulfur cathode. The future directions towards achieving long-term cycling Li-S batteries with carbonate electrolytes are provided.

A new insight into capacity fading of sulfurized polyacrylonitrile composite in carbonate electrolyte

Furong Qin et al.

Summary: Sulfurized polyacrylonitrile (S/PAN) composite is considered as a promising cathode material for lithium sulfur batteries due to its advantages in cycle performance and carbonate electrolyte compatibility. However, the sluggish reaction kinetics and capacity fading caused by low conductivity remain challenges. In long-term cycle tests, the capacity fading is found to be highly related to increasing resistance and the formation of sulfates or sulfate-like components during repeated cycling processes.

Origin of shuttle-free sulfurized polyacrylonitrile in lithium-sulfur batteries

Chen-Jui Huang et al.

Summary: By utilizing in-situ Raman and in-situ X-ray absorption spectroscopies, along with density functional theory calculations, the fundamental reaction mechanism of sulfurized polyacrylonitrile (S-cPAN) cathode material in lithium-sulfur batteries is unveiled. The formation of sulfur-nitrogen bonds and their strong interactions during the synthesis process are proposed, providing a new perspective on sulfur chemistry and paving the way for designing high capacity, shuttle-free cathode materials for next-generation Li-S batteries.

Understanding the Roles of the Electrode/Electrolyte Interface for Enabling Stable Li∥Sulfurized Polyacrylonitrile Batteries

Zhaohui Wu et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates the crucial role of LiNO3 additive in preventing LiSx species from dissolving into the electrolyte, thereby reducing shuttle effect and capacity loss. Carbonate electrolyte forms porous dendritic Li morphology on Li anode, while ether-based electrolyte forms dense spherical Li morphology, proving that ether-based electrolyte with LiNO3 is the preferred choice for stable cycling.
