Understanding the Unique Thermodynamic Behavior of MgTFSI2/DME Solutions. Part 2: Thermodynamic Hypothesis, Raman Analyses, and Driving Forces

Oria Holin et al.

Summary: A unique thermodynamic behavior was observed for solutions of magnesium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonimide) in 1,2-dimethoxyethane, where the solutions display temperature-dependent phase separation. The driving forces for phase separation are explained by statistical thermodynamics based on the populations of different conformers. Raman spectroscopy analysis revealed an increase in the entropy of the dilute phase with temperature, attributed to a decrease in salt concentration and an increase in population of entropically favored conformers.

Tuning magnetic heating efficiency of colloidal dispersions of iron oxide nano-clusters by varying the surfactant concentration during solvothermal synthesis

Sidharth Sanadhya et al.

Summary: This article reports the tuning of MFH efficiency of magnetic nanofluids containing iron-oxide MNCs by varying the surfactant concentration. Experimental findings indicate that decreasing surfactant concentration leads to an increase in primary nano-crystallite size, resulting in higher magnetization and dynamic coercivity, thus improving the heating efficiency. This is beneficial for designing colloidally stable dispersions of MNCs with improved MFH efficiency.

Designing gel polymer electrolyte with synergetic properties for rechargeable magnesium batteries

Liping Wang et al.

Summary: This study presents the synthesis of a non-corrosive gel polymer electrolyte based on magnesium tetrakis(hexafluoroisopropyloxy)borate, which demonstrates excellent electrolytic properties. The electrolyte shows high ionic conductivity, reversible Mg plating/stripping capability, and low voltage polarization, while preventing dissolution and diffusion of soluble electrode materials. Additionally, it suppresses the polysulfide shuttle in Mg-S batteries, thus improving battery performance.

Development of Magnesium Borate Electrolytes: Explaining the Success of Mg[B(hfip)4]2 Salt

Piotr Jankowski et al.

Summary: Magnesium batteries are a promising post-lithium technology, and finding an efficient and safe electrolyte is crucial for their commercialization. Magnesium tetrakis(hexafluoroisopropyloxy)borate (Mg[B(hfip)(4)](2)) is considered one of the best candidates due to its electrochemical properties and chemical stability. In this study, we analyze the unique structure of this salt and the interactions in the electrolyte, revealing the delicate balance between electron-withdrawing effects and ligand stabilization. Understanding the nature of this anion allows for the rational development of new anion structures.

Salt-Induced Liquid-Liquid Phase Separation: Combined Experimental and Theoretical Investigation of Water-Acetonitrile-Salt Mixtures

Minglun Li et al.

Summary: Through a combination of experiment and theory, we systematically investigated the phase behaviors in water-acetonitrile-salt mixtures, obtaining complete ternary phase diagrams for nine representative salts and constructing a thermodynamic free energy model. Our study revealed that hydration is the main driving force for liquid-liquid separation and plays a significant role in specific ion effects.
