Chirality in Light-Matter Interaction

Andrew Lininger et al.

Summary: The scientific effort to control the interaction between light and matter has experienced exponential growth in the last 2 decades. This growth has been facilitated by the development of scientific and technological tools that allow manipulation of light at sub-wavelength scales, leading to the discovery of novel phenomena across different research areas. This review focuses on the role of chirality in light-matter interactions, providing an overview of its properties, materials, and applications, and discussing the future prospects, including the incorporation of machine learning in designing advanced chiroptical materials to enhance and control light-matter interactions at various scales.

Theory of Apparent Circular Dichroism Reveals the Origin of Inverted and Noninverted Chiroptical Response under Sample Flipping

Andrew Salij et al.

Summary: Circular dichroism (CD) is widely used as an optical probe for molecular structures, showing a complex connection with photonic spin states and quantum-mechanical degrees of freedom. Recent experiments on organic thin films have provided insight into the origins of CD, but a theory linking optical selection rules with the microscopic structure of molecules is still needed.

Emergent chiroptical properties in supramolecular and plasmonic assemblies

N. S. Shahana Nizar et al.

Summary: This tutorial provides a comprehensive description of the origin of chiroptical properties in supramolecular and plasmonic assemblies in the UV-visible region, explaining the essential photophysical concepts for understanding chiroptical signatures. The tutorial also discusses the origins of induced circular dichroism (ICD) and exciton coupled circular dichroism (ECD) in molecular and plasmonic systems, as well as plasmonic chirality, focusing on inherent chirality, induced chirality, and surface plasmon-coupled circular dichroism (SP-CD). Additionally, it highlights the differences in oscillator strength between molecular and plasmonic systems, emphasizing the potential for intense CD signals in plasmonic systems for chiral sensing applications.

Pathways to increase the dissymmetry in the interaction of chiral light and chiral molecules

Jake L. Greenfield et al.

Summary: The dissymmetric interaction between circularly polarised light and chiral molecules is important across various fields, but the selectivity in absorption or emission of left-handed versus right-handed CP light is often low. Strategies to enhance this interaction include molecular design, modification of light, and creating macroscopic chiral structures, offering hope for advancements in research involving interactions of chiral molecules and light.

BINOLated aminostyryl BODIPYs: a workable organic molecular platform for NIR circularly polarized luminescence

Josue Jimenez et al.

Summary: The highlighted at-boron-BINOLated 3,5-bis(4-aminostyryl)ated BODIPY scaffold shows promise as a platform for developing enantiopure small organic molecules exhibiting CPL in the NIR region, even in water solution. The synthetic simplicity and chiroptical efficiency of this scaffold pave the way for advancing CPL tools based on organic emitters and NIR radiation.
