Optimization of synthesis condition of type II Ge clathrate film

Rahul Kumar et al.

Summary: Type II Ge clathrate has been poorly investigated, especially in terms of its basic properties and practical applications, due to the challenges in achieving defect-free high-quality films. In this study, the key synthesis parameters affecting the film quality were investigated, including temperature profile, duration, and the amount of guest atom (Na) evaporated during synthesis. The optimization of synthesis conditions resulted in improved film quality compared to previous studies.

Synthesis of Type II Ge and Ge-Si Alloyed Clathrates Using Solid- State Electrochemical Oxidation of Zintl Phase Precursors

Andrew Dopilka et al.

Summary: In this study, Germanium clathrates with the type II structure were successfully synthesized using electrochemical oxidation of Zintl phase precursors. The introduction of Si element through alloying the Zintl phase precursor promoted the selective formation of clathrate products.

Solid-State Electrochemical Synthesis of Silicon Clathrates Using a Sodium-Sulfur Battery Inspired Approach

Summary: The paper presents a method for the selective formation of Na8Si46 clathrates through electrochemical oxidation at high temperatures, showing that product morphology and selection can be altered by adjusting reaction conditions. The electrochemical performance of the synthesized product at room temperature is evaluated for the first time, indicating potential for controlled crystal growth and a better understanding of the formation processes of intermetallic clathrates through solid-state electrochemical oxidation of Zintl phases at high temperatures.

Structural and Electrochemical Properties of Type VIII Ba8Ga16-delta Sn30+delta Clathrate (delta approximate to 1) during Lithiation

Andrew Dopilka et al.

Summary: Clathrates of the tetrel elements can undergo Li alloying reactions with high capacities, with structural changes during lithiation leading to the formation of Li-rich amorphous phases and improved cycling performance compared to beta-Sn. Density functional theory calculations suggest that topotactic Li insertion is not favorable in clathrates, leading to the formation of the amorphous phase. The unique cage structure of clathrates may kinetically prevent the formation of crystalline Li-Sn or Li-Ga phases, resulting in better cycling and lower reaction voltages.

Summary: The metastable type-II clathrate Na24-delta Ge136 was obtained through a two-step procedure involving the reaction of Na12Ge17 with benzophenone in an ionic liquid followed by annealing under an argon atmosphere. The resulting product exhibited metallic properties and showed slow aging behavior at room temperature.

A fabrication method for type-II Ge clathrate film by annealing of Ge film covered with Na layer

Rahul Kumar et al.

Summary: A simplified and enhanced method was employed to fabricate type-II Ge clathrate film on a sapphire substrate, involving the deposition of a metal Na layer on an amorphous Ge film and subsequent annealing under high vacuum. The synthesis of type II Ge clathrate film was confirmed through X-ray diffraction and Raman measurements, while the film was observed to be granular with numerous cracks.

Structural Origin of Reversible Li Insertion in Guest-Free, Type-II Silicon Clathrates

Andrew Dopilka et al.

Summary: The study found that the guest-free, type-II Si clathrate (Si-136) has structural features suitable for electrochemical Li storage, and revealed the mechanism of Li insertion through X-ray characterization and DFT calculations. Lithium can insert into the Si-20 and Si-28 cages, migrate through interconnected Si-28 cages, and suggest potential applications as Li-ion battery anodes.
