Conquering residual light absorption in the transmissive states of organic electrochromic materials

Anna M. Osterholm et al.

Summary: This review provides an overview of efforts in developing anodically coloring electrochromic molecules that are transparent and colorless in the charge neutral state, and rapidly switch to a colored state upon oxidation. The use of density functional theory computational approach helps in proposing, synthesizing, and studying target molecules. Additionally, the combination of pendant phosphonic acid binding substituents with high surface area mesoporous indium tin oxide (ITO) electrodes allows for the distribution of electrochromes throughout the oxide film, bringing about high light absorption and color density.

Fluorescent Organic Small Molecule Probes for Bioimaging and Detection Applications

Yufei Yang et al.

Summary: The activity levels of key substances in organisms, such as metal ions and reactive oxygen species, have close associations with intracellular redox reactions, disease occurrence and treatment, and drug absorption and distribution. Fluorescence imaging technology has great potential in various fields of medicine, including molecular biology, cellular immunology, and oncology. Among different kinds of organic fluorescent probes, fluorescent organic small molecule probes (FOSMPs) have gained significant attention due to their excellent physicochemical properties, such as good photostability, high spatial and temporal resolution, and excellent biocompatibility. FOSMPs have been proven suitable for in vivo bioimaging and detection. This article comprehensively reviews the latest progress of FOSMPs in the applications of bioimaging and detection, introduces the preparation and application of fluorescent organic nanoparticles (FONPs) designed with FOSMPs as fluorophores, and discusses the future prospects of FOSMPs in bioimaging and detection.

Benchmarking time-dependent density functional theory for singlet excited states of thermally activated delayed fluorescence chromophores

Xiaopeng Wang et al.

Summary: Thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) is a promising technique to enhance the efficiency of organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). In this study, computer simulations based on time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) were used to predict the excited state properties of TADF chromophores. The study found that range-separated double hybrid functionals, wB2PLYP and wB2GP-PLYP, provided qualitatively correct predictions of the relative singlet excitation energies and spectral composition of TADF chromophores. These findings are important for the computational screening and design of TADF chromophores and the development of efficient OLEDs.
