A review on ammonia blends combustion for industrial applications

Lianwei Kang et al.

Summary: This article reviews various methods to enhance NH3 combustion, including oxygen-enriched combustion and plasma-assisted combustion. The combustion velocity and emissions of NH3 blended with other fuels are analyzed, as well as the combustion of NH3 mixed with liquid fuels and NOx emissions of NH3-fueled gas turbines. The study suggests that rich-lean staged combustion is currently the most desirable approach.

The NH 3 /NO 2 /O 2 system: Constraining key steps in ammonia ignition and N 2 O formation

Peter Glarborg

Summary: Amine/NO2 interactions play a crucial role in ignition and N2O emissions. This study reinterpreted the reported results from batch and flow reactors, and provided additional results on the impact of O2 on the NH3/NO2 reaction. The analysis constrained the rate constants for NH3 and NH2 reactions with NO2, as well as the subsequent steps involving H2NO and HNO intermediates. The experimental and modeling findings support the present understanding of the reaction kinetics.

Experimental and modeling study on the auto-ignition properties of ammonia/methane mixtures at elevated pressures

B. Shu et al.

Summary: Ammonia (NH3) is a promising carbon-free energy carrier for energy and transportation systems, but its low flammability and high NOx emission potential hinder its pure implementation. Methane can be used as a co-firing fuel with ammonia to enhance reactivity and control emissions. This study investigates the ignition properties of NH3/CH4 mixtures at intermediate temperatures and elevated pressures, revealing that higher CH4 mole fractions increase reactivity and reactivity decreases with higher fuel-oxygen equivalence ratios. Comparing experimental data with existing mechanisms, a modified mechanism is proposed for better reproduction of measurements.

An experimental and modeling study of ammonia with enriched oxygen content and ammonia/hydrogen laminar flame speed at elevated pressure and temperature

Krishna Prasad Shrestha et al.

Summary: This study experimentally investigated the laminar flame speeds of ammonia and ammonia-hydrogen blends under different temperature, pressure, and oxygen content conditions, and developed a new kinetic model for predicting the oxidation mechanisms, considering the formation and reduction of nitrogen oxides. The results showed that the laminar flame speed increases with increasing initial temperature, fuel hydrogen content, or oxidizer oxygen content, but decreases with increasing initial pressure. The proposed kinetic model predicts the same trends as experiments and highlights the importance of N2H2 formation under rich conditions.

Experimental and kinetic modeling study on NH3/syngas/air and NH3/bio-syngas/air premixed laminar flames at elevated temperature

Shangkun Zhou et al.

Summary: Ammonia (NH3) plays a crucial role in large-scale storage and long-distance transportation of renewable energy. Co-firing with syngas and bio-syngas, along with increasing the initial temperature of reactants, are effective methods to enhance the reactivity of NH3 flames. However, current kinetic models lack accuracy in temperature dependence, indicating a need for further research in this area.

An experimental and kinetic modeling study on the laminar burning velocity of NH3+N2O+air flames

Xinlu Han et al.

Summary: In this study, the laminar burning velocities of NH3+N2O+air flames were measured experimentally, showing a linear relationship with the fraction of nitrous oxide in the oxidizer mixture. Comparison with recent NH3 mechanisms revealed that the models of Nakamura et al. and Stagni et al. performed the best. The authors' H/N/O kinetic mechanism was updated and showed improved agreement with experimental data and literature.

Summary: The laminar burning velocities of ammonia blended with methanol/air and ethanol/air flames were studied, a new kinetic mechanism was proposed and validated, and it was found that interactions between C- and N-containing species are insignificant for the laminar burning velocities of various ammonia blending mixtures.

Ammonia oxidation regimes and transitional behaviors in a Jet Stirred Flow Reactor

Maria Virginia Manna et al.

Summary: This study experimentally identified combustion regimes for NH3/O2 mixtures diluted in N2 and found a transition from low temperature combustion to high temperature combustion at 1300K. Kinetic analyses suggest that NH2 oxidation routes play a key role in determining different combustion regimes.
