Solvated dielectrons from optical excitation: An effective source of low-energy electrons

Sebastian Hartweg et al.

Summary: Low-energy electrons dissolved in liquid ammonia or aqueous media can serve as powerful reducing agents but can also cause radiation damage to biological tissue. The mechanistic processes underlying electron transfer steps are still not fully understood. This study demonstrates how ultraviolet (UV) photoexcitation of metal-ammonia clusters can be used to generate tunable low-energy electrons. The UV light-induced generation of spin-paired solvated dielectrons and their subsequent relaxation through unconventional electron transfer-mediated decay offer an efficient source of low-energy electrons. This process has the potential to improve our understanding of radiation damage and facilitate mechanistic studies of solvated electron reduction reactions.

Determining the translational and internal temperatures of isolated metal clusters: A comprehensive approach based on molecular-beam-deflection experiments

Thomas M. Fuchs et al.

Summary: This study presents an analysis of translational, rotational, and vibrational temperatures of small metal clusters in a molecular beam, showing that the translational temperature is considerably lower than the nozzle temperature, while the rotational temperature is estimated to be in a specific range for a certain nozzle temperature. The vibrational temperature varies under different conditions, with a significant difference observed at lower temperatures.

Influence of nuclear spins on electron spin coherence in isolated, p-doped tin clusters

Thomas M. Fuchs et al.

Summary: The magnetic double deflection experiments reveal the impact of nuclear spins on electron spin coherence in isolated AlSn12 clusters, and discuss the superatomic response of nuclear spins in the endohedral cage clusters. By varying the concentration of nuclear spins in the tin cage using isotopically enriched tin samples, the study delves into hyperfine interaction, nuclear spin statistics, and spin dynamics. Furthermore, it is demonstrated that state-interference in the multistate Landau-Zener system AlSn12 explains the significant increase in spin decoherence with the presence of one or two nuclear spins in the cluster.

Magnetic deflection of neutral sodium-doped ammonia clusters

J. V. Barnes et al.

Summary: In this study, the setup and performance of a new pulsed Stern-Gerlach deflector for small sodium-doped ammonia clusters have been described. NaNH3 showed expected deflection, while larger clusters displayed smaller deflections, with intracluster relaxation times estimated to be around 200 microseconds. This research aims to improve understanding of the magnetic properties of isolated, weakly-bound clusters.
