Uncovering heterogeneity of anacardic acids from pistachio shells: A novel approach for structural characterization

Giovanni Ventura et al.

Summary: This study proposes a new strategy for the analysis of Anacardic acids (AnAs) in plants. By using RPLC separation, ESI-MS/MS detection, and an epoxidation reaction, the positional isomers of AnAs in pistachio have been identified for the first time. This discovery paves the way for further study of the potential health benefits of these compounds.

The Need to Unravel Arsenolipid Transformations in Humans

Teresa Chavez-Capilla

Summary: Arsenic exposure to humans mainly comes from the diet, particularly drinking water, rice, and seafood; the complexity of arsenic species in food makes regulation challenging, especially with the widespread presence of arsenolipids in seafood; human exposure to arsenolipids may pose various risks, requiring further research.

Arsenolipids in salmon are partly converted to thioxo analogs during cooking

Chan Xiong et al.

Summary: This study investigated the arsenolipids present in salmon before and after cooking, finding that a significant portion of arsenic hydrocarbons naturally present in fresh fish are converted to their thioxo analogs during the cooking process. This conversion may influence the toxicity of the compounds and suggests that future food regulations for arsenic should consider the impact of cooking on the type of arsenolipid in fish.

Diverse arsenic-containing lipids in the surface ocean

Katherine R. Heal et al.

Summary: Arsenic is found at nanomolar levels in the ocean and is assimilated by microbes due to its similarity to phosphorus. Particulate arsenic in the open ocean is mainly composed of arsenolipids, with arsenosugar phospholipids dominating the pool and a presence of unidentified ether lipids, indicating a bacterial source.

Positional Assignment of C-C Double Bonds in Fatty Acyl Chains of Intact Arsenosugar Phospholipids Occurring in Seaweed Extracts by Epoxidation Reactions

Davide Coniglio et al.

Summary: This study presents a new method to determine the carbon-carbon double bond positions of fatty acyl chains in water-soluble diacyl arsenosugar phospholipids (As-PL). Using this method, abundant unsaturated fatty acids were found in the brown alga wakame, confirming it as a good source of essential fatty acids with a balanced omega 6/omega 3 ratio.

Arsenic through aquatic trophic levels: effects, transformations and biomagnification-a concise review

Devanita Ghosh et al.

Summary: This review discusses the occurrence of arsenic (As) in various aquatic habitats and the direct or indirect effects on different organisms, including bacteria, algae, phytoplankton, zooplankton, and higher trophic levels. Special emphasis is given to finfishes and shellfishes that are commonly consumed by humans. The review also provides an overview of commonly used detection methods for As and highlights the importance of using As metabolites as an indicator of human exposure. Furthermore, the integration of 'omics' approaches and advanced sequencing technologies is emphasized for global monitoring of the human gut microbiome and understanding the effects and consequences of As bioaccumulation.

Discovery and Identification of Arsenolipids Using a Precursor-Finder Strategy and Data-Independent Mass Spectrometry

Qingqing Liu et al.

Summary: Arsenolipids are a class of lipid-soluble arsenic species with high potentials of cytotoxicity and neurotoxicity. A new sensitive and high-throughput screening method was developed to detect and identify 23 arsenolipids in seafood samples, including novel ones not reported before. By incorporating precursor ion scan into data-independent acquisition and using HPLC-MS technique, efficient identification of arsenolipids in seafood samples was achieved, demonstrating the applicability of the method for environmental research.

Arsenolipids in Plankton from High- and Low-Nutrient Oceanic Waters Along a eTransect in the North Atlantic

Ronald A. Glabonjat et al.

Summary: The study found arsenolipids in 61 plankton samples with varying levels of nutrients in the North Atlantic Ocean. The relative amounts of six identified arsenolipids in the samples showed a clear dependence on the nutrient status of the surrounding water. By combining field data with global phytoplankton productivity, it is estimated that oceans' phytoplankton convert 50,000-100,000 tons of arsenic into arsenolipids annually.

Summary: The lipidome of the brown seaweed wakame was extensively examined, revealing a variety of phospholipids and glycolipids. Saturated fatty acid C16:0 was the most abundant, while monounsaturated C18:1 and polyunsaturated C18:2 and C20:4 chains were predominant. The study's findings may open up possibilities for lipidomic investigations on other edible marine algae, highlighting their potential as a source of bioactive lipids.
