Interactions of hydrolyzed β-lactams with the L1 metallo-β-lactamase: Crystallography supports stereoselective binding of cephem/carbapenem products

Philip Hinchliffe et al.

Summary: L1 is a dizinc subclass B3 metallo-beta-lactamase that plays a key role in antibiotic resistance in Stenotrophomonas maltophilia. It hydrolyzes beta-lactam antibiotics and is resistant to current MBL inhibitors. This study provides insights into the structure and mechanism of L1 through kinetic studies and crystal structures, offering potential for the development of new antibiotics and inhibitors.

Determination of ß-lactam antibiotics in animal derived foods by modified QuEChERS coupled with ultra performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry

Jing Wu et al.

Summary: This study developed an effective method for the simultaneous determination of 52 types of β-lactam antibiotics (ss-LAs) in meat and poultry, aquatic products, milk, and eggs samples. The method involves a modified QuEChERS sample preparation technique combined with UPLC-MS/MS. The results demonstrate excellent linearity, low detection limits, and good recovery rates, making it a powerful tool for monitoring ss-LAs residues in animal derived foods.

The Impact of Copper Ions on the Activity of Antibiotic Drugs

Bojana Bozic Cvijan et al.

Summary: Copper is an essential trace metal that can impact the activity of antibiotics by forming complexes and degrading antibiotic structure. In vitro studies have shown interactions between copper ions and various antibiotics in clinical use, and caution should be exercised when using prescribed antibiotics in patients with altered copper levels. Additionally, several copper-dependent compounds with antibacterial activity have been discovered. Further investigation is needed to explore the potential of copper-antibiotic interactions in changing the efficiency of antimicrobial therapy.

Photocatalytic Penicillin Degradation Performance and the Mechanism of the Fragmented TiO2 Modified by CdS Quantum Dots

Shen Wang et al.

Summary: A novel method was adopted to construct a CdS-TiO2 heterostructure for degrading penicillin under sunlight, using potato extract as a stabilizer and modifier. The CdS-TiO2 composite showed high photocatalytic degradation efficiency, especially with 5% CdS-TiO2 performing optimally with an 88% degradation rate for penicillin after 2 hours. The study also provided insight into the penicillin degradation mechanisms and the importance of the CdS-TiO2 heterojunction in enhancing photocatalytic efficiency.
