Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi mediate how plant herbivory history influences herbivore performance

Hannah Locke et al.

Summary: Herbivore performance is influenced by plant host quality, chemical defences, and herbivory history. Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AM fungi) can alter both plant quality and plant responses to herbivory. This study found that the effects of herbivory history on herbivore performance depend on the AM fungal environment of the plant.

Unraveling arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi-induced resistance of purple branch rose (Rosa rugosa 'Zizhi') to Lymantria dispar based on metabolomics

Yaru Lv et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the effects of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) inoculation on rose growth and its resistance to gypsy moth larvae. The results showed that AMF inoculation improved the growth of rose plants and prolonged the developmental duration of gypsy moth larvae. Feeding on mycorrhizal rose leaves reduced the weight, length, and width of gypsy moth larvae. AMF also promoted the accumulation of plant hormones in rose leaves and altered the composition of metabolites. These findings provide reference for using AMF to control plant pests.

Understanding Multilevel Selection May Facilitate Management of Arbuscular Mycorrhizae in Sustainable Agroecosystems

Nancy Collins Johnson et al.

Summary: Studies have shown that adaptation of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi and other microbes in natural ecosystems to local environmental conditions can help alleviate stress and optimize plant fitness. Field experiments indicate that the biomass and benefits of AM fungi for plants generally decrease when fertilization and irrigation eliminate nutrient and water limitations. Conventional agricultural practices may inadvertently select for less beneficial root symbioses.

Differential effects of nematode infection on pollinating and non-pollinating fig wasps: Can shared antagonism provide net benefits to a mutualism?

Justin Van Goor et al.

Summary: Species pairs forming mutualistic associations are part of broader organismal community networks, shaping the evolution of individual mutualisms through various interactions. Limited understanding exists on how community associates impact the fitness of mutualists. In a model interaction network, the infection of non-pollinating fig wasps by nematodes was found to impact their survival and dispersal ability more severely than the mutualistic partner, indicating a novel role of density-dependent facultative mutualism.

Mycorrhizal symbiosis primes the accumulation of antiherbivore compounds and enhances herbivore mortality in tomato

Javier Rivero et al.

Summary: The association between plants and arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) can enhance their resistance to herbivorous insects, as shown by a study on tomato plants colonized by Funneliformis mosseae. Metabolomic analysis revealed that this symbiosis had a limited impact on leaf metabolism under normal conditions, but significantly modulated the response to herbivory in damaged areas. Primed accumulation of defensive compounds such as alkaloids, fatty acid derivatives, and phenylpropanoid-polyamine conjugates was observed in damaged leaflets of mycorrhizal plants, showcasing the impact of AMF on metabolic reprogramming in response to herbivory.

Glycoalkaloid Content in Italian Potato Breeding Clones Improved for Resistance against Potato Tuber Moth (Phthorimaea operculella Zeller)

Jose Sanchez del Pulgar et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the glycoalkaloid content in six hybrid potato clones from an Italian breeding programme, finding significant variability in content among clones. While genotypic variation was the main factor influencing glycoalkaloid accumulation, the study also highlighted the influence of agro-climatic conditions on the content.
