Impact of periodontitis on gingival crevicular fluid miRNAs profiles associated with cardiovascular disease risk

Gaetano Isola et al.

Summary: This study assessed the impact of periodontitis on the expression of gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) miRNAs associated with cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk. The results showed that periodontitis and its extent were significant predictors of GCF miRNAs concentration. The findings highlight the importance of periodontitis in relation to CVD risk.

Salivary macrophage chemokines as potential biomarkers of gingivitis

Amna Alhammadi et al.

Summary: The salivary levels of MAF, MCF, and MIF were analyzed in healthy and gingivitis patients, and their concentrations were correlated with the intensity of gingival inflammation. A total of 60 saliva specimens were collected from healthy and gingivitis patients, and clinical examination was conducted to record BOP, VPI, and SMGI. ELISA was used to assay the concentrations of MAF, MCF, and MIF. The results showed that MIF could be a potential salivary biomarker for gingivitis.

Summary: This study investigated the concentrations of angiogenesis-related proteins in saliva and serum in relation to smoking and periodontitis. The results showed that concentrations of these proteins were significantly higher in periodontitis patients compared to healthy controls, while smokers had elevated levels of specific proteins in serum compared to nonsmokers.

Environmental factors and periodontal microbiome

Nurcan Buduneli

Summary: Periodontal diseases are chronic inflammatory diseases triggered mainly by bacteria and their toxins, with tissue destruction resulting from the host response towards the periodontal microbiome. Environmental factors like tobacco smoking and psychological stress disrupt the symbiotic relationship and affect the balance of the periodontal microbiome.

Polymicrobial communities in periodontal disease: Their quasi-organismal nature and dialogue with the host

George Hajishengallis et al.

Summary: In health, indigenous polymicrobial communities at mucosal surfaces maintain an ecological balance via interactions that promote their own and the host's fitness. However, destabilizing factors may disrupt this balance, leading to dysbiosis and periodontitis. Dysbiotic community is a quasi-organismal entity with constituent organisms communicating and displaying functional specialization.

Free amino acid composition of saliva in patients with healthy periodontium and periodontitis

Nur Balci et al.

Summary: The study found that patients with periodontitis had higher concentrations of citrulline and carnosine in their saliva, while different types of periodontal disease were associated with higher concentrations of methionine, glutamic acid, arginine, proline, and tryptophan. The significant correlation between methionine, citrulline, arginine, and carnosine with clinical periodontal parameters suggests that different levels of salivary free amino acids play roles in periodontitis.

The potential impact of salivary peptides in periodontitis

Christophe Hirtz et al.

Summary: Periodontitis is a complex immune-inflammatory disease associated with various factors such as genetics, metabolism, immunity, and inflammation, and is linked to systemic conditions. Current diagnosis relies on clinical measurements which have poor precision, highlighting the need for reliable and objective biomarkers for early detection. Saliva, with contributions from gingival crevicular fluid, shows promise for biomarker discovery, but a more holistic approach using -omics technologies may be necessary for periodontitis biomarker identification.

Oral and periodontal implications of tobacco and nicotine products

Benjamin W. Chaffee et al.

Summary: Tobacco use poses significant risks to oral health, with a wide range of adverse effects and increased prevalence of oral diseases among smokers. The emergence of new tobacco and nicotine products, such as electronic cigarettes and heated tobacco, presents additional challenges for dental professionals. Understanding the implications of these products, as well as providing counseling and support for tobacco cessation, is crucial in managing periodontal disease and promoting oral health.
