Promoting Human Milk and Breastfeeding for the Very Low Birth Weight Infant

Margaret G. Parker et al.

Summary: Providing mother's own milk for hospitalized very low birth weight infants in the NICU has short- and long-term health benefits. When mother's own milk is not available, pasteurized human donor milk is recommended as an alternative. Neonatal health care providers can support lactation in the NICU to reduce disparities in provision of mother's own milk.

Predictors of Developmental and Respiratory Outcomes Among Preterm Infants With Bronchopulmonary Dysplasia

Iris Morag et al.

Summary: This study found that preterm infants with moderate-severe bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) had lower developmental scores and higher inhaler use frequency. Factors such as parents' lower education level, maternal asthma/allergies, and smoking in the family were associated with moderate-severe BPD. Exposure to breastmilk, higher income level, and daycare attendance had a positive impact on development, while exposure to cigarette smoke, family allergies, and daycare attendance were important factors in inhaler use frequency.
