Effects of postnatal glucocorticoids on brain structure in preterm infants, a scoping review

Isabella Robles et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the effects of postnatal glucocorticoid treatment on structural brain development in preterm infants. The findings showed that dexamethasone was consistently associated with decreased total and regional brain volumes, while hydrocortisone was often but not always associated with absence of brain volume differences. More research is needed on the impact of different glucocorticoids on brain structure.

MRI-based brain volumes of preterm infants at term: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Julia Romberg et al.

Summary: This study conducted a systematic review to determine reference ranges for MRI-based brain volumes of very preterm infants at term-equivalent age. The findings provide valuable reference data for future studies on neurodevelopment and interpretation of MRI-based volumetric findings in preterm infants.

Severity of Bronchopulmonary Dysplasia and Neurodevelopmental Outcome at 2 and 5 Years Corrected Age

Trixie A. Katz et al.

Summary: There is an association between the severity of bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) and the risk of neurodevelopmental impairment (NDI) at 2 years and 5 years corrected age. This association does not change over time. The risk of NDI is similar for different degrees of BPD severity at both 2 years and 5 years corrected age.

Hydrocortisone to Improve Survival without Bronchopulmonary Dysplasia

K. L. Watterberg et al.

Summary: This trial found that hydrocortisone treatment starting on postnatal day 14 to 28 did not significantly improve the survival without moderate or severe bronchopulmonary dysplasia compared to placebo. The survival without moderate or severe neurodevelopmental impairment also did not differ significantly between the two groups.

Hydrocortisone to Improve Survival without Bronchopulmonary Dysplasia

K. L. Watterberg et al.

Summary: In this trial involving preterm infants, hydrocortisone treatment starting on postnatal day 14 to 28 did not result in substantially higher survival without moderate or severe bronchopulmonary dysplasia than placebo. Survival without moderate or severe neurodevelopmental impairment did not differ substantially between the two groups.

Neurodevelopmental outcomes of infants with bronchopulmonary dysplasia

Sara B. DeMauro

Summary: Preterm infants with bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) are at high risk for poor developmental outcomes in childhood, especially those with the most severe forms of chronic lung disease during the neonatal period. Only caffeine has been proven to reduce BPD and improve childhood developmental outcomes. Future research needs to better understand the developmental sequelae of BPD beyond school age and test interventions to improve developmental trajectories in this population.
