Removing Pathoanatomical Content From Information Pamphlets About Knee Osteoarthritis Did Not Affect Beliefs About Imaging or Surgery, but Led to Lower Perceptions That Exercise Is Damaging and Better Osteoarthritis Knowledge: An Online Randomised Controlled Trial

Summary: This study compared the effects of providing osteoarthritis information with or without pathoanatomical content on people's beliefs about managing osteoarthritis. The results showed that removing pathoanatomical content did not change beliefs about imaging and surgery, but it did lead to lower perceptions that exercise is damaging and improved osteoarthritis knowledge. However, these effects were small and of unclear clinical relevance. Tertiary education or a history of care seeking for knee pain may moderate the effects on primary outcomes.

Summary: This study found that labeling low back pain with different diagnostic labels can influence people's beliefs about imaging, surgery, second opinion, seriousness, recovery, work, and physical activities. Labeling low back pain as "episode of back pain", "lumbar sprain", and "non-specific LBP" can reduce the perceived need for imaging, surgery, and second opinion, as well as decrease the perceived seriousness of low back pain and enhance recovery expectations.

Epidemiology of osteoarthritis

Summary: This narrative review summarizes the current evidence on the prevalence, incidence, and risk factors of osteoarthritis (OA) at the person-level and joint-level. The review highlights the high prevalence of OA worldwide, with older individuals, women, certain racial and ethnic groups, and individuals with lower socioeconomic status being more affected. Obesity and joint injury are identified as modifiable risk factors with the strongest evidence. Other emerging topics with potential associations with OA risk or progression include specific vitamins and diets, high blood pressure, genetic factors, metformin use, bone mineral density, abnormal joint shape and malalignment, and lower muscle strength/quality. The review also emphasizes the heterogeneity of OA and the importance of understanding and defining OA phenotypes. Overall, OA is a prevalent condition with significant global impacts on health outcomes, necessitating efforts to mitigate obesity and joint injury risks.

Comparative effect of two educational videos on self-efficacy and kinesiophobia in people with knee osteoarthritis: an online randomised controlled trial
