Regulation of plasmalogen metabolism and traffic in mammals: The fog begins to lift

Fabian Dorninger et al.

Summary: Due to their unique chemical structure, plasmalogens exhibit distinct biological features and require specialized pathways for biosynthesis and metabolism. Despite some progress, many questions about the regulation of plasmalogen metabolism and their distribution in mammals remain unanswered. This article summarizes current evidence on the regulation of enzymes involved in plasmalogen biosynthesis and degradation, as well as the turnover of plasmalogens, with a focus on plasmalogen traffic in mammals.

An efficient excited-state proton transfer fluorescence quenching based probe (7-hydroxyquinoline) for sensing trivalent cations in aqueous environment

Mohan Singh Mehata

Summary: 7-hydroxyquinoline can exist in different forms and exhibit unique fluorescence properties in water, with metal ions causing fluorescence quenching. The presence of metal ions inhibits keto formation and tautomerization of 7-HQ.

Plasmalogens regulate the AKT-ULK1 signaling pathway to control the position of the axon initial segment

Tiago Ferreira da Silva et al.

Summary: This study reveals a previously unknown mechanism that links the phospholipid composition of the neuronal membrane to the positional assembly of the AIS. Deficiency of plasmalogens is shown to displace the AIS to more distal positions and reduce excitability, leading to potential implications for neurodegenerative diseases characterized by plasmalogen defects such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease. Rescuing the impaired AKT signaling pathway normalizes AIS position independently of the biochemical defect.

Peroxisome-driven ether-linked phospholipids biosynthesis is essential for ferroptosis

Weiwei Cui et al.

Summary: Ferroptosis is primarily induced by peroxidation of long-chain PUFA, but the role of SFA remains unclear. The study identified FAR1 as a key factor in SFA-mediated ferroptosis, involved in the synthesis of alkyl-ether lipids and plasmalogens, revealing a new pathway for ferroptosis.

Potential Role of Plasmalogens in the Modulation of Biomembrane Morphology

Zakaria A. Almsherqi

Summary: Plasmalogens, a subclass of cell membrane glycerophospholipids, are distinguishable by their vinyl-ether bond and polyunsaturated fatty acid content. They are abundant in neuronal, immune, and cardiovascular cell membranes, and play crucial roles in protecting cell membrane components and cell signaling. Insights into their structural and functional properties may contribute to understanding membrane transformation mechanisms.
