Design Concepts for Solution and Solid-State Emitters - A Modern Viewpoint on Classical and Non-Classical Approaches

Alexander Huber et al.

Summary: For a long time, luminescence phenomena were distinguished between isolated molecules and close-packed structures. However, the discovery of dual-state efficient materials has led to the ability to achieve balanced emission regardless of the molecular surroundings. This mini review explores the structural features of solid-state emitters and provides a generalized perspective on design concepts.

Heteroaryl-Substituted Bis-Anils: Aggregation-Induced Emission (AIE) Derivatives with Tunable ESIPT Emission Color and pH Sensitivity

Timothee Stoerkler et al.

Summary: The synthesis, structure, and photophysical properties of a series of heteroaryl-substituted bis-anil derivatives with aggregation-induced emission (AIE) and excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) are described. The fluorescence color of the aggregates can be adjusted by changing the peripheral substitution, resulting in a wide range of emission wavelengths. The introduction of strong electron-withdrawing groups such as cyano leads to a competition between ESIPT and deprotonation, resulting in anionic emission at low water percentage.

Blue-Emitting 2-(2′-Hydroxyphenyl)benzazole Fluorophores by Modulation of Excited-State Intramolecular Proton Transfer: Spectroscopic Studies and Theoretical Calculations

Maxime Munch et al.

Summary: This article presents the synthesis, spectroscopic studies, and theoretical calculations of nine novel fluorophores based on the HBX scaffold. By modifying the phenol ring and functionalizing the aniline moiety, the excited-state intramolecular proton transfer process and fluorescence emission wavelengths can be controlled. Furthermore, the functionalization of the aniline moiety has a significant impact on the excited-state stabilities of the tautomers.

Polymer Mechanochromism from Force-Tuned Excited-State Intramolecular Proton Transfer

Huan Hu et al.

Summary: This study reports the development of a mechanochromic mechanophore based on excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) for real-time strain sensing in polyurethane films. The mechanophore exhibited high sensitivity and excellent reversibility to stress, and the mechanochromism was attributed to chain-transduced force. Density function theory (DFT) calculation was performed to analyze the force-tuned ESIPT process. This research lays the foundation for practical applications in real-time stress/strain sensing.

Phototriggered Aggregation-Induced Emission and Direct Generation of 4D Soft Patterns

Huilin Xie et al.

Summary: This study reports a strategy for achieving remote spatio-temporal control of luminescence behaviors through a non-contact way. By changing the metal-ion species, the fluorescence emission and intensity can be tuned, and the mechanism of UV-mediated fluorescence change, including the phototriggered aggregation-induced emission (PTAIE) process, is investigated. The findings demonstrate opportunities for the development of controllable smart materials and expand the scope of the materials in advanced optoelectronic applications.

Impact of Heteroatom Substitution on Dual-State Emissive Rigidified 2-(2′-hydroxyphenyl)benzazole Dyes: Towards Ultra-Bright ESIPT Fluorophores

Thibault Pariat et al.

Summary: HBX fluorophores are well-known for their synthetic versatility, photostability, and strong solid-state fluorescence. However, their performance is heavily quenched in solution due to efficient non-radiative pathways. In this study, a simple structural modification of the heteroring in HBX dyes led to significant changes in emission color, dual emission engineering, and fluorescent quantum yield, showing promising abilities as bright dual-state emitters in both solution and solid state.

Summary: This study investigates the influence of direct (hetero)arylation on the optical properties of ESIPT dyes, revealing different excited-state dynamics depending on the nature of substitution and a strong increase in quantum yield in the solution state for pyridine substitution. The development of a second series of dyes with alkyl or aryl pyridinium moieties showing strong tunable solution/solid fluorescence intensity is also demonstrated.
