Xueqing Li et al.

Summary: A family of tribenzocoronene derivatives with various substituents were synthesized and characterized. The substitution effect on optical and electrochemical properties was systematically studied using theoretical calculations. Azepine-Embedded Seco-Hexabenzocoronene-Based Helix Nanographenes: Access to Modification of the Core by N-H Functionalization

Bin Zhang et al.

Summary: A new type of nitrogen-doped nanographene was designed and synthesized by introducing NH into a hexa-peri-hexabenzocoronene (HBC) core. The nitrogen-doped nanographene can be functionalized through N-H derivatization and optical resolution of the chiral nanographene was achieved through modifications to the NH site. The emission intensity and fluorescence mechanism of the nanographene can be modulated by introducing various aryl groups with different substituents.

A Heptacene Analogue Entailing a Quinoidal Benzodi[7]annulene (7/6/7 Ring) Core with a Tunable Configuration and Multiple Redox Properties

Yan-Ying Huang et al.

Summary: We report a heptacene analogue with a quinoidal benzodi[7]annulene core, which can be modulated from a wavy to a curved configuration by changing the substituents. Mesityl groups linked to the heptagons induce polymorphism, allowing the configuration to be tuned from curved to wavy. Additionally, the new non-benzenoid acene can be oxidized or reduced to radical cation or anion forms.

Heptagon-Containing Nanographene Embedded into [10]Cycloparaphenylene

Juan P. Mora-Fuentes et al.

Summary: We synthesized and characterized a new type of nanohoop that contains a curved heptagon-containing pi-extended polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) unit. This nanohoop showed strong binding abilities with curved pi-systems such as fullerenes C-60 and C-70. The host-guest complexes formed between the nanohoop and fullerenes displayed rapid charge separation upon photoexcitation, indicating promising electron-donor properties.

Helical Bilayer Nonbenzenoid Nanographene Bearing a [10]Helicene with Two Embedded Heptagons

Lin Yang et al.

Summary: The synthesis of helical bilayer nanographenes with new topology has attracted great interest due to their unique physicochemical properties. In this study, the first helical bilayer nonbenzenoid nanographene (HBNG1) was successfully synthesized from a specially designed precursor. The HBNG1 not only possesses a novel [10]helicene backbone with two embedded heptagons, but also exhibits a highly twisted bilayer geometry with a record small interlayer distance of 3.2 angstrom. The close interlayer distance allows for intramolecular through-space conjugation, as evidenced by spectroelectrochemistry studies and DFT simulations. The chiroptical properties of the P/M enantiomers of HBNG1 were also evaluated using circular dichroism and circularly polarized luminescence.

Facile Synthesis of Helicene-Containing Arenes for Optical Limiting Devices

Xiaohui Yu et al.

Summary: A helicene-containing arene and its linear analogue have been successfully synthesized and characterized. The single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis reveals that the former exhibits an offset packing arrangement with pi-pi overlap. The introduction of pentagon-rings into the parent skeletons enhances stability and increases solubility in organic solvents. The structural difference significantly affects the optical limiting performance, with the helicene-containing molecule demonstrating higher response towards 532 nm laser compared to the linear analogue. This study contributes to the functionalization of helicenes and their nonlinear optical properties.

Divergent Synthesis of Contorted Polycyclic Aromatics Containing Pentagons, Heptagon, and/or Azulene

Taifeng Liu et al.

Summary: In this study, a one-step divergent synthesis of four contorted aromatics with pentagons, a heptagon, and/or an azulene from the same difluorenyl pentacenediene precursor was achieved. The subtle differences in molecular structure were confirmed by X-ray crystallography. The mechanisms underlying the control of different products, involving ring-expansion rearrangement, Scholl reactions, and/or Mallory cyclization, were proposed based on control experiments and DFT calculations. This development enhances the structural versatility and materials accessibility in the study of contorted aromatics.

The Scholl Reaction as a Powerful Tool for Synthesis of Curved Polycyclic Aromatics

Yiqun Zhang et al.

Summary: The past decade has witnessed remarkable success in the synthesis of curved polycyclic aromatics through Scholl reactions. These curved polycyclic aromatics are unique objects in structural organic chemistry and play an important role in the precise synthesis of nanocarbons with unique topology. They have received considerable attention in supramolecular chemistry and organic functional materials due to their interesting properties and promising applications. However, the understanding of the reaction mechanism and possible rearrangement processes is still limited, making it difficult to predict the outcome of a newly designed substrate in the Scholl reaction.

Asim Kumar Swain et al.

Summary: This paper describes the stereospecific synthesis and functional properties of C-2- and C-1-symmetric pyrene-fused [5]helicene molecules connected via hexagonal and heptagonal rings. The molecules exhibited high configurational stability and unique functional properties due to the fusing mode of [5]helicene with pyrene and molecular symmetry. The estimated Gibbs activation energy for enantiomerization of one of the molecules was among the highest reported values for any p-conjugated molecules incorporating [5]helicene moiety.
