An unexpected acid-catalyzed rearrangement of diacetoxy benzylidenespirostanes to spirochromene acetals and spiroindenes with radical scavenger activity

Manuel A. Ramos-Enriquez et al.

Summary: 23E-diacetoxybenzylidenespirostanes undergo rearrangement in the presence of HCl, and the type of rearrangement depends on the substitution pattern in the phenyl ring. Compounds with an acetoxy group at the ortho position produce spirochromenes, while compounds with no substituent at the ortho position produce spiroindenes. All rearranged compounds show moderate antioxidant activity.

Palladium-Catalyzed Generation of ortho-Quinone Methides. A Three-Component Synthesis of L-Shaped Dimeric Steroidal Scaffolds

Martha C. Mayorquin-Torres et al.

Summary: A series of hybrid dimers with orthogonal steroidal cores bridged by a chroman ketal moiety were obtained through Pd-catalyzed three-component reactions, showing one L-shaped scaffold with large channels. Monte Carlo simulations indicate these voids preferentially allocate n-hexane, suggesting potential applications as selective hosts for small molecules.

Common Trends and Differences in Antioxidant Activity Analysis of Phenolic Substances Using Single Electron Transfer Based Assays

Melanie Platzer et al.

Summary: Numerous assays have been developed to measure antioxidant activity, with the DPPH and ABTS assays being popular examples. This study compared the antioxidant potentials of 24 phenolic compounds using both methods and found common trends among most subgroups, but significant differences for some compounds. It suggests that the choice of assay should be based on the specific subgroup of phenolic compounds being studied.
