Controllable FRET processes towards ratiometric Fe3+ ion sensor of pseudo [3]rotaxane containing naphthalimide-based macrocyclic host donor and multi-stimuli responsive rhodamine-modified guest acceptor

Tu Thi Kim Cuc et al.

Summary: The novel pseudo [3]rotaxane with host-guest interactions serves as a Fe3+ ion sensor with sensing capabilities in various acidic and basic conditions. The detection of Fe3+ ion is achieved through the Foster resonance energy transfer (FRET) process. The pseudo [3]rotaxane provides a prominent limit of detection value for Fe3+ ion detection in water samples.

Precise Rate Control of Pseudorotaxane Dethreading by pH-Responsive Selectively Functionalized Cyclodextrins

Sawsen Cherraben et al.

Summary: A family of cyclodextrins functionalized with different numbers of amines can control the rate of their threading and dethreading on a molecular axle based on pH and substitution pattern. The uniqueness of this system lies in the ability to directly control the switch rate by operating the stimulus on the macrocycle.

Sequence-Selective Decapeptide Synthesis by the Parallel Operation of Two Artificial Molecular Machines

Javier Echavarren et al.

Summary: This study reports the preparation of a decapeptide through the parallel operation of two rotaxane-based molecular machines, involving simultaneous operation of two molecular peptide synthesizers, selective residue activation, ligation, and product release. The design of the machines enables the synthesis of a product that exceeds the capabilities of individual small-molecule machines, reminiscent of the ligation and post-translational modification of proteins in biology.

Halogen-Bonding Strapped Porphyrin BODIPY Rotaxanes for Dual Optical and Electrochemical Anion Sensing

Yuen Cheong Tse et al.

Summary: The study reports rare anion receptors employing two distinct sensory mechanisms, halogen-bonding porphyrin BODIPY [2]rotaxanes. H-1 NMR, UV/visible and electrochemical studies show that the coordination of the triazole group in the rotaxane axle to the zinc(II) metalloporphyrin-containing macrocycle component enhances anion binding affinities. Mechanically bonded BODIPY and metalloporphyrin motifs allow the anion recognition event to be sensed by quenching of the BODIPY fluorophore and cathodic perturbations of the metalloporphyrin P/P+ redox couple.

Polyhalogenated Bicyclo[1.1.1]pentane-1,3-dicarboxylic Acids

Thi Phuong Le et al.

Summary: Highly selective radical chlorination of 2,2-difluorobicyclo[1.1.1]pentane-1,3-dicarboxylic acid was reported, resulting in new bicyclo[1.1.1]pentane cages carrying fluorine and chlorine atoms. The positions of halogen atoms and acidity constants were confirmed by X-ray diffraction and capillary electrophoresis, respectively, with experimental values in agreement with those predicted by DFT methods. Extensive DFT calculations were used to rationalize the selective formation of isomers and determine relative strain energies.

A reference scale of cucurbit[7]uril binding affinities

Mohammad A. Alnajjar et al.

Summary: Accurately determining ultra-high binding affinities in supramolecular host-guest chemistry is challenging due to sensitivity constraints of common titration methods. Competitive titrations with well-established reference compounds can provide a reference scale for determining high binding affinities, such as with the host cucurbit[7]uril (CB7) in the range from 10^3 to 10^15 M^-1. These commercially available reference compounds will aid in future research on stimuli-responsive host-guest systems.

A Cd(II) and Zn(II) selective naphthyl based [2]rotaxane acts as an exclusive Zn(II) sensor upon further functionalization with pyrene

Somnath Bej et al.

Summary: A new multi-functional [2]rotaxane, ROTX, was synthesized and functionalized with pyrene moieties to develop a bifluorophoric [2]rotaxane, PYROTX. Metal ion sensing studies showed that ROTX is selective for Zn(II) and Cd(II), while PYROTX exhibits exclusive selectivity towards Zn(II) over various other metal ions.
