To what extent are the characteristics of painful temporomandibular disorders predictors of self-reported limitations in jaw function?

Afrim Fetai et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the predictive value of the source, intensity, and duration of temporomandibular disorder (TMD) pain on limitations in jaw function. The results showed that pain intensity had a stronger correlation with jaw limitations than chronicity, and headache attributed to TMD was a significant predictor of jaw limitations.

Oral health quality of life is associated to jaw function and depression in patients with myogenous temporomandibular dysfunction

Summary: Depression symptoms and jaw function are significantly associated with oral health-related quality of life. The best model and cut-off to discriminate between good and poor oral health-related quality of life only include jaw function.

Investigation of the relationship between probable sleep bruxism, awake bruxism and temporomandibular disorders using the Diagnostic Criteria for Temporomandibular Disorders (DC/TMD)

Basak Cigdem Karacay et al.

Summary: This study investigated the relationship between sleep bruxism and awake bruxism with temporomandibular disorders. The results showed that bruxism was associated with muscle disorders and disk displacement with reduction, and awake bruxism was also associated with arthralgia. Bruxers displayed parafunctional habits, and awake bruxism caused greater functional limitation of the jaw compared to sleep bruxism.

Personality, psychosocial and oral behavioural risk factors for temporomandibular disorder symptoms in Asian young adults

Adrian Ujin Yap et al.

Summary: This study investigated the relationship between personality traits, psychosocial factors, somatisation, and oral behaviours with temporomandibular disorder (TMD) symptoms. The results showed that anxiety, somatisation, and oral behaviours were associated with painful and dysfunctional TMD symptoms in Asian young adults.

Impact of different types of temporomandibular disorders on jaw functional limitation and psychological distress in orthodontic patients

Ruichen Dan et al.

Summary: This study investigated the prevalence of different types of temporomandibular joint disorders (TMDs) in orthodontic patients and its relationship with jaw functional limitation and psychological distress. The results showed that more than one-third of orthodontic patients had TMDs, with a lower prevalence of painful TMDs (PT) compared to non-painful TMDs (NPT). Patients with TMDs experienced more severe jaw functional limitation, with PT patients being more severe than NPT patients, and had worse psychological states.

Differential ltem Functioning of the Jaw Functional Limitation Scale

Swaha Pattanaik et al.

Summary: This study assessed the differential item functioning (DIF) of the Jaw Functional Limitation Scale (JFLS) in terms of gender, age, and language (English vs Spanish). Data from 2,115 adult dental patients were analyzed, and it was found that the JFLS had essential unidimensionality but had locally dependent items. After adjustment for multiple comparisons, a few items showed statistically significant DIF. However, the magnitude of DIF was relatively small, and the impact on test scores was minimal.

Distribution of anxiety and depression among different subtypes of temporomandibular disorder: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Pedro Henrique Feres Reis et al.

Summary: This systematic review investigated the distribution and severity of anxiety and depression in patients diagnosed with different subtypes of temporomandibular disorder (TMD). The findings suggest that patients with myofascial pain are more anxious and more depressed than patients with other subtypes of TMD. Proper assessment of the psychological state of patients is essential for offering adequate treatment and management of each specific subtype of TMD.

Summary: This systematic review evaluated the presence of comorbid conditions among patients with temporomandibular disorders (TMDs). The results showed a high prevalence of chronic pain comorbidities among patients with TMDs, with over 50% reporting chronic back pain, myofascial syndrome, and chronic stomach pain. Psychiatric disorders were less commonly studied in this population.

Summary: Temporomandibular disorders (TMD) are musculoskeletal diseases affecting the jaw muscles and temporomandibular joints. Chronic TMD can be considered as a condition with chronic primary orofacial pain. The main objectives of treatment are to decrease pain, improve jaw joint function, and reduce muscle spasms and pain.

Somatic and temporomandibular disorder symptoms-Idioms of psychological distress in Southeast Asian youths

Adrian Ujin Yap et al.

Summary: The study found that somatic and TMD symptoms are common in Southeast Asian youths and may be a manifestation of psychological distress. Significant differences in psychological distress were observed among youths with varying severity of somatic and TMD symptoms, with female gender, TMD symptoms, and stress identified as risk factors for somatic symptoms. Additionally, somatic symptoms and stress were identified as potential factors for TMDs.

Summary: The study found that patients with painful temporomandibular disorders have higher levels of emotional distress, sleep impairments, and poorer oral health-related quality of life. Additionally, there is a significant association between painful TMDs and increased stress levels and decreased OHRQoL. Routine evaluation of biopsychosocial distress is important for these patients.
