Neuroprotective influence of macular xanthophylls and retinal integrity on cognitive function among persons with multiple sclerosis

Jonathan Cerna et al.

Summary: This study found that individuals with multiple sclerosis (MS) exhibited poorer attentional inhibition and slower processing speed. However, higher macular xanthophyll optical density (MPOD) and optic disc retinal nerve fiber layer (odRNFL) levels were independently associated with greater attentional inhibition and faster processing speed among persons with MS.

The Role of Diet and Interventions on Multiple Sclerosis: A Review

Panagiotis Stoiloudis et al.

Summary: This article provides a review of the role of diet in the pathogenesis of multiple sclerosis (MS) and the effects of dietary interventions on MS activity and progression. Research suggests that diet may affect the onset, course, and quality of life in MS patients. Further large prospective clinical studies are needed to thoroughly evaluate the role of diet in MS.

Mapping the Literature on Diet and Multiple Sclerosis: A Data-Driven Approach

Xiaochen Qu et al.

Summary: This study provides an overview of the literature on the relationship between diet and multiple sclerosis (MS) and identifies gaps in knowledge. Through literature reviews and data analysis, four main clusters of research topics are identified: MS risk and symptom management, mouse models of MS, gluten sensitivity, and dysphagia. The study reveals a lack of research on MS disease progression and limited evidence on the relationship between foods/nutrients and MS. Future studies should focus on filling these knowledge gaps.

Macular Xanthophylls and Markers of the Anterior Visual Pathway among Persons with Multiple Sclerosis

Jonathan Cerna et al.

Summary: Individuals with MS-ON showed poorer xanthophyll status in the macula and serum compared to healthy controls. MPOD was positively correlated with beneficial anatomical features in the MS group, while odRNFL thickness was negatively correlated with serum lutein and zeaxanthin levels. Further studies with larger cohorts are needed to confirm these findings and evaluate the effects of xanthophyll on the anterior visual pathway in MS.

The Effect of Lutein/Zeaxanthin Intake on Human Macular Pigment Optical Density: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Lisa M. Wilson et al.

Summary: Increasing intake of lutein/zeaxanthin can improve macular pigment optical density (MPOD) in adults with healthy eyes, especially at higher doses, while the effects of lutein/zeaxanthin intake below 5mg/d or from dietary sources are less clear. Future research is needed to determine the minimum dose and duration of lutein/zeaxanthin intake that is associated with a clinically important change in MPOD or visual function.
