Slip activity during low-stress cold creep deformation in a near-a titanium alloy

Claudius Dichtl et al.

Summary: This study investigated two different bimodal microstructures of near-alpha titanium alloys to shed light on the deformation mechanisms during cold dwell. It was found that basal slip is initially dominant at low stress levels, while prismatic slip increases approaching the yield stress. Additionally, the sample with coarse transformation product exhibited more plastic strain and longer slip traces, indicating higher susceptibility to cold creep deformation.

Plasticity, localization, and damage in ferritic-pearlitic steel studied by nanoscale digital image correlation

T. Vermeij et al.

Summary: The evolution of deformation from plasticity to localization to damage in ferritic-pearlitic steel was investigated through nanometer-resolution microstructure-correlated SEM-DIC strain mapping. Key plasticity mechanisms in ferrite and pearlite and their relation to microstructural arrangement were revealed. Two contrasting mechanisms for damage initiation in pearlite were identified, which potentially results in macroscale fracture. Recommendations for damage resistant ferritic-pearlitic steels are proposed based on the findings.

Irradiation growth behavior and effect of hydrogen absorption of Zr-based cladding alloys for PWR

Kazuo Kakiuchi et al.

Summary: To understand the dimensional stability of fuel rods in commercial LWRs, irradiation growth testing was conducted on various Zr-based fuel cladding materials. The study investigated the effect of hydrogen absorbed in the cladding tube on irradiation growth behavior. It was found that when the hydrogen content exceeded the solubility limit, the acceleration of irradiation growth became significant. The study also confirmed that improved Zr-based alloys had lower irradiation growth compared to conventional Zry-4.

In situ He+ irradiation of the double solid solution (Ti0.5,Zr0.5)2(Al0.5,Sn0.5)C MAX phase: Defect evolution in the 350-800 °C temperature range

B. Tunca et al.

Summary: The effects of irradiation on the MAX phase (Zr-0.5,Ti-0.5)(2)(Al-0.5,Sn-0.5)C were studied using TEM, showing the formation of helium bubbles, dislocation loops, and grain boundary tearing at high temperatures. Increased crystal symmetry and damage recovery were observed at elevated temperatures, indicating potential self-healing properties in the material.

Synthesis of new M-layer solid-solution 312 MAX phases (Ta1-xTix)3AlC2 (x=0.4, 0.62, 0.75, 0.91 or 0.95), and their corresponding MXenes

Maxwell T. P. Rigby et al.

Summary: Quaternary MAX phases and a new MXene material have been successfully synthesized in this study through pressureless sintering and chemical etching. These materials pave the way for a range of alloyed MXenes with tunable compositions for a wide range of potential applications.
