Evaluation of Fillers for Magnesium Potassium Phosphate Cement (MKPC) for the Encapsulation of Low and Intermediate Level Metallic Radioactive Wastes

Mikel Dieguez et al.

Summary: This study explores the influence of coal fly ash (FA), wollastonite (WO), pumice (PM), and metakaolin (MK) as fillers on the rheological, mechanical, chemical, and mineralogical properties of a magnesium potassium phosphate cement (MKPC) used for encapsulating radioactive wastes. Various pastes and mortars of MKPC were investigated, and parameters such as workability, compression strength, dimensional stability, pH, chemical composition, and mineralogical properties were analyzed. The results showed that the fillers had minimal chemical impact on the MKPC system, and all formulations with a water/cement mass ratio of <0.65 exhibited high compressive strengths and pH values in the passivation zone of aluminum corrosion after 90 days.

Effect of magnesium-to-phosphate ratio on the corrosion resistance of magnesium alloy embedded in magnesium potassium phosphate cement

Danqian Wang et al.

Summary: The effect of the magnesium-to-phosphate (M/P) ratio on the corrosion resistance of magnesium alloys embedded in magnesium phosphate cement pastes was investigated. The results showed that the corrosion resistance of magnesium alloys increased with an increased M/P ratio. The pH value played a dominant role in the protective capability of the oxide film formed on the magnesium alloy.

Corrosion resistance of Mg-Al-Zn magnesium alloy concrete formwork in Portland cement paste

Danqian Wang et al.

Summary: The corrosion resistance of Mg-Al-Zn magnesium alloy in PC paste was found to be higher than that of 6061 aluminium alloy control due to the formation of a more compact and thinner oxide film. Both oxide films on the alloys are n-type semiconductors, but with different compositions.

Preparation and Properties of Magnesium Phosphate Cement-Based Fire Retardant Coating for Steel

Xiaobing Dai et al.

Summary: Magnesium phosphate cement (MPC) has the potential to serve as an inorganic binder for steel coating. The addition of expanded vermiculite (EV) enhances the fireproof performance of MPC coatings. Dehydration and decomposition of reacted products in the hardened MPC coating contribute to its excellent fireproof performance. Slight ceramic formation and integration during the fire test compensate for the strength decrease caused by dehydration and decomposition.

Summary: The author's research focuses on corrosion and protection mechanisms of steel in different environments and the use of alternative materials in civil engineering. Results show that stainless steel exhibits instability in high temperature and chloride environments, while alkaline-activated fly ash can replace traditional cementitious materials. Additionally, phosphates can be used as corrosion inhibitors in concrete.

Corrosion Behavior of Cold-Formed AA5754 Alloy Sheets

Anna Dobkowska et al.

Summary: The corrosion behavior of AA5457 alloy sheet is complex and involves trenching around coarse Si-rich particles, crystallographically-grown large pits, and the formation of multiple tiny pits around Si-rich nanoparticles. Bending AA5457 changes the shape and distribution of Si-rich coarse particles, increases the dislocation density in the material, especially around Si-rich nanoparticles, all leading to a lower corrosion behavior in the bending area.

Summary: Magnesium phosphate cement (MPC) can be used as a fast sludge curing agent, and appropriately reducing the reaction rate can increase strength. The retarder reduces the reaction rate and increases strength, indicating that strength is affected by the rate of formation of hydration products.
