Stress corrosion cracking initiation susceptibility of Alloy 182 with different surface treatments

Summary: This study evaluated the effects of machining surface preparations on the stress corrosion cracking (SCC) susceptibility in boiling water reactor environment for Alloy 182 weld metal. The results showed that the surface treatments strongly influenced the resistance to SCC initiation, influenced by the machining-induced deformation and surface oxide layer.

Summary: The study evaluated the applicability of an accelerated test technique using tapered tensile specimens to investigate the stress corrosion crack (SCC) initiation behavior of structural materials in high-temperature water. The advantage of this method is that a stress gradient is obtained through a single test, allowing for the determination of an SCC initiation stress threshold within a reasonable timeframe.
