Nanoindentation-induced deformation behaviors of tetrahedral amorphous carbon film deposited by cathodic vacuum arc with different substrate bias voltages

Lijun Wang et al.

Summary: Research on diamond-like carbon (DLC) thin films found that the properties and morphology of these films were highly controlled by the bias voltage during preparation, with mechanical properties significantly dependent on the applied voltage. Transmission electron microscopy observed the microstructure and interfaces of the DLC films, while nano-indentation tests revealed the deformation and crack formation mechanisms under different voltage conditions.

The sp2-sp3 transition and shear slipping dominating the compressive deformation of diamond-like carbon

Yifeng Yu et al.

Summary: The mechanical properties and deformation mechanisms of diamond-like carbon (DLC) films were studied through molecular dynamics simulation. It was found that sp(2)-sp(3) transition led to the compressive failure of the films. The strength and ductility of the films were influenced by temperature and compression strain rate.

Study of Diamond-Like Carbon coating application on carbide substrate for cutting tools used in the drilling process of an Al-Si alloy at high cutting speeds

Paulo Sergio Martins et al.

Summary: Aluminum alloys are widely used in various industries for their excellent mechanical properties. Adding silicon to the composition improves machinability and wear resistance. This study investigated the application of DLC coating on carbide tools and found that it enhanced wear resistance. The presence of DLC had minimal impact on the quality of holes during machining of aluminum alloy.

New evidences for understanding the serrated flow and shear band behavior in nanoindentation of metallic glasses

Hu Huang et al.

Summary: Nanoindentation experiments were conducted on a Zr-based metallic glass under various loading rates, revealing that increasing the loading rate weakened the size of serrated flow but kept the number stable, while maintaining similar shear band features around residual indents. These results challenge the previous understanding derived from experiments using the Berkovich indenter.

Summary: This study investigates the mechanical response of non-hydrogenated DLC films with different sp3 concentrations using various experimental and simulation methods, revealing unexpected plastic deformation mechanisms. The research shows a good agreement between experiments and simulations, demonstrating an increase in elastic modulus and hardness of DLC films with higher sp3 content.

Microstructure evolution and wettability regulation of air-exposed hydrogen-free diamond-like carbon films

Keke Meng et al.

Summary: Regulation of surface wettability is essential for DLC coatings in various fields. This study deposited hydrogen-free DLC films with adjustable wettability on silicon substrates by controlling surface hybridized structures, revealing a non-monotonic relationship between surface wettability and hybridization states. The research provides a possible mechanism for fabricating high-performance DLC films with special surface wettability.

Evaluation of the surface fatigue behavior of amorphous carbon coatings through cyclic nanoindentation

Tim Weikert et al.

Summary: Diamond-like carbon coatings are commonly used to reduce wear and friction in machine components and forming tools, and doping with metals or metal carbides as well as using multilayer architectures can enhance toughness under cyclic loading. This study utilized cyclic nanoindentation to characterize the tribologically induced surface fatigue behavior of single-layer tungsten-doped and multilayer silicon oxide containing amorphous carbon coatings. The multilayer architecture showed superior resistance to plastic deformation and hindering crack initiation, contributing to favorable surface fatigue behavior in cyclic nanoindentation studies.

Effect of Carbon Configuration on Mechanical, Friction and Wear Behavior of Nitrogen-Doped Diamond-Like Carbon Films for Magnetic Storage Applications

Summary: The study found a close relationship between the friction, wear, and mechanical properties of NDLC films and their sp(2)/sp(3) carbon ratios. Lower carbon ratios resulted in better mechanical properties and higher wear resistance. NDLC films showed excellent robustness and durability at high temperatures.
