Elucidating the effect of Al2O3/SiO2 mass ratio upon SiO2-MnO-CaF2-Al2O3-based welding fluxes: Structural analysis and thermodynamic evaluation

Zhanjun Wang et al.

Summary: The effect of Al2O3/SiO2 mass ratio on SiO2-MnO-CaF2-Al2O3-based fluxes was investigated, focusing on the morphologies of weld metal and slag shell. It was found that flux viscosity could be significantly reduced by increasing the Al2O3/SiO2 mass ratio from 0.1 to 0.6, with negligible changes thereafter. The compositional dependence of flux behaviors was elucidated through structural analysis using spectroscopic techniques and molecular dynamics simulation.

TiO2-Assisted Microstructural Variations in the Weld Metal of EH36 Shipbuilding Steel Subject to High Heat Input Submerged Arc Welding

Yongwu Wu et al.

Summary: Two comparable fluxes, pure CaF2 and CaF2-40 wt pct TiO2, were used to modify shipbuilding steels under high heat input submerged arc welding to investigate the unique functions of TiO2 addition. Compared with pure CaF2, TiO2-containing flux could increase the width of columnar austenite from 119.2 +/- 18.1 to 201.5 +/- 32.2 μm. Furthermore, TiO2 could significantly enhance the fraction of acicular ferrite, primarily through the formation of Ti-bearing inclusions.

Simulating molten pool features of shipbuilding steel subjected to submerged arc welding

Ming Zhong et al.

Summary: The molten pool features of EH36 shipbuilding steel during the submerged arc welding process have been investigated through simulation. The role of interface tension in welding is revealed, and the evolution of molten pool morphology is understood by comparing different models. Disregarding the interface tension model results in a small weld depth-to-width ratio due to outward flow, while applying the interface tension model leads to a deep penetration morphology with a large weld depth-to-width ratio due to inward flow governed by the Marangoni forces. The simulation results involving the interface tension model have been verified with satisfactory predictability.

A Raman and Multinuclear 29Si, 27Al, and 19F NMR Study on the Structural Roles of CaF2 in SiO2-CaO-Al2O3-based Welding Fluxes

Huiyu Tian et al.

Summary: In this study, the structural roles of CaF2 on SiO2-CaO-Al2O3-based welding fluxes were investigated using Raman and magic angle spinning-nuclear magnetic resonance (MAS-NMR) techniques. The results showed that increasing content of CaF2 led to depolymerization of the flux structures, with an increase in the proportion of AlF6 species. This behavior of F offers a theoretical basis for adjusting structural unit mobility and element transfer behaviors during welding processes.

Insight into the Viscosity-Structure Relationship of MnO-SiO2-MgO-Al2O3 Fused Submerged Arc Welding Flux

Zhanjun Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the influence of Al2O3 on the viscosity and structure of MnO-SiO2-MgO(-Al2O3) submerged arc welding fluxes. The results show that the viscosity initially decreases and subsequently increases with increasing Al2O3 contents, which is consistent with the variation trend of activation energy. The enhanced polymerization of the flux structure with higher Al2O3 contents is confirmed by the distribution characteristics of various oxygen species. The variation trend is likely due to the competing effects of overall weakened bond energy and enhanced degree of polymerization of the flux structure.

Bubble Evolution Behaviors Induced by CaO-Al2O3-SiO2-CaF2 Fluxes Subjected to High Heat Input Submerged Arc Welding

Zhanjun Wang et al.

Summary: Bubble evolution behaviors have been thoroughly documented in the solidified slags detached from EH36 shipbuilding steel weld metals processed by CaO-Al2O3-SiO2-CaF2 fluxes. The decrease in CaF2 content leads to a decrease in bubble retention tendency, mainly caused by the disappearance of fluorite and cuspidine and the formation of amorphous phases.

Phosphorus Transfer Behaviors Induced by CaF2-TiO2-CaO Fluxes in EH36 Shipbuilding Steel Subject to High Heat Input Submerged Arc Welding

Ming Zhong et al.

Summary: The transfer behavior of phosphorus in submerged arc welding of EH36 shipbuilding steel with CaF2-TiO2-CaO fluxes has been systematically investigated. It was found that dephosphorization can be induced with a CaO content higher than 15.7 mass pct, while phosphorus uptake may occur otherwise. The major driving force enabling phosphorus transfer is largely governed by the activity difference between hypothetical P2O5 in the flux and that equilibrated with the weld metal.

Crystallization behavior of CaF2-TiO2 fluxes geared towards high heat input submerged arc welding

Zhanjun Wang et al.

Summary: This study systematically investigated the crystallization behaviors of CaF2-TiO2 fluxes with varying TiO2 contents. It was found that the TiO2 content of 30 wt.% exhibited the highest barrier to crystallize and the highest capability to achieve the most desired production of amorphous welding fluxes for high heat input applications.

Understanding the solidification and leaching behavior of synthesized Cr-containing stainless steel slags with varying Al2O3/SiO2 mass ratios

Zhanjun Wang et al.

Summary: This study examined the impact of Al2O3/SiO2 mass ratios on the crystallization behavior of stainless steel slags and the leaching stability of Cr-containing slags. The results showed that adding appropriate amounts of Al2O3 could help stabilize Cr in the primary spinel phase, reducing leaching of Cr into the environment.

Summary: The study found through molecular dynamics simulation that with the increase of Al2O3 content, the content of tri-coordinate O and high-coordinate Al in CaO-SiO2-Al2O3 melt increased to balance charge. With the addition of Al2O3, the viscosity of the melt increased and reached a maximum at 26 mol% of Al2O3.

Viscosity and structure evolution of CaO-SiO2-MgO-Al2O3-BaO slag with the CaO/SiO2 mass ratio of 0.9

Wenguo Liu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the influence of BaO on the viscosity and structure evolution of CaO-SiO2-MgO-Al2O3-BaO slag. It was found that the addition of BaO could promote the transformation of structural units within the slag, but higher BaO content led to an increased polymerization degree. The results were supported by structural analysis techniques such as FTIR, Raman spectra, and 27Al MAS-NMR.
