Impact of Delirium on Outcomes After Intracerebral Hemorrhage

Summary: Delirium after intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) can lead to worse outcomes, but it is possible for the symptoms to improve before hospital discharge. The study found that most ICH patients experienced resolution of delirium by the time they were discharged, which was associated with better outcomes compared to patients with persistent delirium. The study also suggested that postacute care site may partially mediate the relationship between delirium and functional outcome in ICH survivors.

A Scoping Review of the Incidence, Predictors, and Outcomes of Delirium Among Critically Ill Stroke Patients

Summary: The incidence of delirium among stroke patients ranged from 12% to 75%, with predictors including older age, preexisting dementia, higher severity of illness, and physical restraint use. Outcomes associated with delirium included higher mortality, longer length of stay, worse cognition and quality of life, and lower functional status.

Hyperactive delirium in patients after non-traumatic subarachnoid hemorrhage

Summary: The study investigated the risk factors and impact of hyperactive delirium in SAH patients. Mechanical ventilation over 48 hours, detection of an aneurysm, lower Hunt&Hess grade, and pre-treated psychiatric disorder were associated with delirium development. Overall, delirium was not associated with worse outcome, but patients with delirium often had intermediate outcomes based on modified Rankin Scale Score.

Summary: This study found that prestroke psychiatric symptoms and acute phase delirium independently predicted post-stroke mortality at 3-and 12 months. Detection and treatment of mental health conditions in the population at increased risk of stroke may help reduce poststroke mortality in sub-Saharan Africa.

Impact of Delirium and Its Motor Subtypes on Stroke Outcomes

Summary: This study investigated the occurrence of delirium and its different motor subtypes in stroke patients and their impact on prognosis. Delirium was found to be associated with an increased risk of death and functional dependence at 30 and 90 days, as well as higher 90-day mortality. Specifically, the occurrence of mixed and hypoactive subtypes seemed to predict worse outcomes in this population.
