Summary: The severity of upper limb impairment in stroke patients two weeks after the event can partly predict real-life upper limb use three months later. Additional factors such as motor-evoked potential (MEP) status and neglect, in addition to the Fugl-Meyer (FM) score, play a significant role in future upper limb use. Non-normal use could be reliably predicted based on MEP and/or neglect, with high sensitivity and specificity.

Summary: Stroke often impairs the control of the contralesional arm, but also affects the ability of the ipsilesional arm to produce well-controlled isometric forces, especially in pushing or pulling in lateral directions. This effect is mainly associated with abnormal activity of proximal muscles compared to matched controls.
