The familial risk and heritability of multiple sclerosis and its onset phenotypes: A case-control study

Graysen Steele Boles et al.

Summary: The risk of developing MS increases by several folds in individuals with a relative with MS. Having a first-degree family member with ROMS increases the odds of developing MS by 7-fold, while having a second-degree family member with ROMS increases the odds by 2-fold. The study findings suggest that the disease phenotype is independent of genetic predisposition.

Interpreting change on the Symbol Digit Modalities Test in people with relapsing multiple sclerosis using the reliable change methodology

Zachary Weinstock et al.

Summary: The study suggests that an SDMT score change of 8 or more points offers the best balance of discriminatory power and external validity for estimating cognitive decline in individual patients. This methodology could be useful for identifying meaningful cognitive decline in both clinical management and clinical trial outcomes.

Cognitive trajectories in multiple sclerosis: a long-term follow-up study

Summary: In multiple sclerosis, cognitive impairment worsens over time and can be predicted by physical disability and hippocampal atrophy. Clinicians can use these predictors to identify patients in need of cognitive rehabilitation.

Correlates of patient-reported cognitive performance with regard to disability

Delphine Van Laethem et al.

Summary: This study examines the relationship between subjective and objective cognitive screening tools in multiple sclerosis (MS) patients and investigates the use of the Multiple Sclerosis Neuropsychological Questionnaire (MSNQ) as a screening tool for cognitive impairment and depression in this population. The results show that MSNQ scores are significantly correlated with depression but not objective cognitive performance. The relationship between subjective and objective cognitive screening tools is not influenced by physical disability. Patient-reported cognitive measures can be useful in identifying patients who may need further psychological assessment.

Trajectories of Symbol Digit Modalities Test performance in individuals with multiple sclerosis

Brian C. Healy et al.

Summary: The study identified trajectories of change in cognitive functioning for people with multiple sclerosis. Participants with higher baseline values showed improvement, while those with lower baseline values experienced cognitive worsening. Baseline age and disease duration were associated with cognitive performance.

Summary: This study adapted the Charlson comorbidity index for use in Swedish medical register-based research, creating a cohesive coding system to enhance efficiency in distinguishing different disease severities. This work may provide an integrated and efficient coding algorithm for reliable data collection in Sweden.
