The familial risk and heritability of multiple sclerosis and its onset phenotypes: A case-control study

Summary: The risk of developing MS increases by several folds in individuals with a relative with MS. Having a first-degree family member with ROMS increases the odds of developing MS by 7-fold, while having a second-degree family member with ROMS increases the odds by 2-fold. The study findings suggest that the disease phenotype is independent of genetic predisposition.

Correlates of patient-reported cognitive performance with regard to disability

Summary: This study examines the relationship between subjective and objective cognitive screening tools in multiple sclerosis (MS) patients and investigates the use of the Multiple Sclerosis Neuropsychological Questionnaire (MSNQ) as a screening tool for cognitive impairment and depression in this population. The results show that MSNQ scores are significantly correlated with depression but not objective cognitive performance. The relationship between subjective and objective cognitive screening tools is not influenced by physical disability. Patient-reported cognitive measures can be useful in identifying patients who may need further psychological assessment.
