High neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio predicts short survival in multiple system atrophy

LingYu Zhang et al.

Summary: The neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) is associated with poor prognosis in patients with multiple system atrophy (MSA), particularly in those with MSA-C subtype and in men.

Soluble uric acid inhibits β2 integrin-mediated neutrophil recruitment in innate immunity

Qiuyue Ma et al.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of uric acid on neutrophils and finds that hyperuricemia impairs neutrophil function. Partial reduction of uric acid levels using uricase can partially restore the neutrophil defects. The study reveals that uric acid affects neutrophil migration by regulating intracellular pH and cytoskeletal dynamics. These findings have important implications for understanding immunodeficiency in kidney disease and sterile inflammation.

Serum Inflammatory Markers and Progression of Nonmotor Symptoms in Early Parkinson's Disease

Ryul Kim et al.

Summary: This study found that peripheral inflammation in early-stage Parkinson's disease (PD) may be related to the progression of nonmotor symptoms (NMSs), particularly mood symptoms. By measuring six inflammatory markers, the researchers found that elevated levels of IL-2 and IL-6 were associated with the progression of NMSs.

Epidemiological Evidence for an Immune Component of Parkinson's Disease

Paulina Gonzalez-Latapi et al.

Summary: There is a growing interest in understanding the role of the immune system and inflammatory response in the development of Parkinson's disease. Epidemiological evidence suggests that Parkinson's disease may be immune-mediated, with associations observed between inflammatory bowel disease and an increased risk of Parkinson's. Medications that suppress the immune system may decrease the risk of Parkinson's, and there are shared genetic variants between Parkinson's and autoimmune conditions. Further research is needed to fully understand the relationship between the immune system and Parkinson's disease.

Insulin-Like Growth Factor 1 Attenuates the Pro-Inflammatory Phenotype of Neutrophils in Myocardial Infarction

Rianne Nederlof et al.

Summary: IGF1 treatment induces an anti-inflammatory phenotype in bone marrow derived neutrophils and attenuates inflammation after myocardial infarction (MI). The effect of IGF1 is mediated through the JAK2/STAT6 pathway rather than the canonical Ras/Raf/ERK or PI3K/AKT pathway. Single cell sequencing analysis shows that IGF1 treatment downregulates pro-inflammatory genes and upregulates anti-inflammatory genes in neutrophils and macrophages after MI.

Inflammation and immune dysfunction in Parkinson disease

Malu Gamez Tansey et al.

Summary: This review explores the role of an ageing immune system, host genetics, and exposure to environmental stressors in promoting the development of Parkinson's disease. It discusses the presence of neuroinflammation and alterations in immune cell populations as well as the potential contributions of viral or bacterial exposure, pesticides, and gut microbiota to disease pathogenesis.

Lower Lymphocyte Count is Associated With Increased Risk of Parkinson's Disease

Melanie P. Jensen et al.

Summary: Lower lymphocyte count is associated with an increased risk of subsequent Parkinson's disease. Other blood markers, such as reductions in eosinophil counts, monocyte counts, and C-reactive protein, may also be related to increased disease risk, but only the association with lower lymphocyte count remains robust. Mendelian randomization analysis suggests a potential causal relationship between lower lymphocyte count and Parkinson's disease risk.

Peripheral Immune Profile and Neutrophil-to-Lymphocyte Ratio in Parkinson's Disease

Laura Munoz-Delgado et al.

Summary: Parkinson's disease patients exhibit altered peripheral immune profiles and higher neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) compared to healthy controls. However, there appears to be no significant association between NLR and clinical characteristics of Parkinson's disease. A meta-analysis also suggests higher NLR in Parkinson's disease patients.
