Exploring alterations in sensory pathways in migraine

Noemi Meylakh et al.

Summary: The study found that during the interictal phase of migraine, there were alterations in the functional connectivity between visual, auditory, olfactory, gustatory, and somatosensory cortices, indicating a dysfunctional sensory network in pain-free migraine patients which may underlie altered sensory processing between migraine attacks.

The effect of migraine and motion sickness on symptoms evoked by the caloric vestibular test

Ozlem Gedik-Soyuyuce et al.

Summary: This study analyzed retrospective data of patients with dizziness and found that the caloric vestibular test (CVT) may evoke symptoms such as headache, nausea, vomiting, and imbalance. Patients with migraines and motion sickness experienced more severe and frequent symptoms after CVT testing. Age was found to be related to the occurrence of imbalance.

A Portrait of Meniere's Disease Using Contemporary Hearing and Balance Tests

Imelda P. Hannigan et al.

Summary: This study aimed to analyze the array of symptoms that patients with Meniere's disease may present initially, and to evaluate their vestibular and audiological test results. The results indicated that atypical presenting symptoms and abnormal test results pose a diagnostic challenge and delay treatment initiation for patients with Meniere's disease.

Vestibular migraine, demographic and clinical features of 415 patients: A multicenter study

Nese Celebisoy et al.

Summary: This study evaluated demographic and clinical features of 415 patients with vestibular migraine (VM) using a structured questionnaire and clinical examination. The results showed that younger patients experienced more severe headache attacks, while older patients had more severe vertigo attacks. BPPV and MD were commonly associated with VM, and VM/MD patients had higher rates of aural and autonomic symptoms compared to pure VM patients. More than half of the patients had a history of motion sickness, and a family history of migraine was associated with younger onset of migraine headaches and vertigo attacks.

Reliability of Monothermal Caloric Test as Screening Test of Vestibular System

Salman F. Alhabib et al.

Summary: This retrospective study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of the monothermal caloric test as a screening test using the bithermal caloric test as a reference. The study found that conducting the monothermal warm stimulating test using the MCA-2 formula yielded better results. However, after adjusting for horizontal spontaneous nystagmus, the specificity decreased. Therefore, completing the bithermal caloric test with cold irrigation before conducting the monothermal caloric test is necessary.

Study of clinical correlation of motion sickness in patients with vestibular migraine

Danyang Meng et al.

Summary: This study collected clinical data from vestibular migraine (VM) patients and healthy control populations to analyze the clinical characteristics of VM patients, focusing on the history of motion sickness. The results showed that VM patients had a higher prevalence of motion sickness history, and women and older individuals were more likely to have VM. The history of motion sickness may serve as a potential suggestive factor for the diagnosis of VM.

Altered Processing of Visual Stimuli in Vestibular Migraine Patients Between Attacks: A Combined VEP and sLORETA Study

Jiahao Liu et al.

Summary: Visual stimuli evoked significantly lower amplitude and decreased latency of P1 activation in VM patients compared to healthy controls, indicating altered processing of low-level visual information. sLORETA analysis showed decreased activity in various brain regions in VM patients, overlapping with the vestibular cortical fields, suggesting a potential pathophysiological mechanism of VM.

Visual snow syndrome, the spectrum of perceptual disorders, and migraine as a common risk factor: A narrative review

Antonia Klein et al.

Summary: VSS, PPPD, fibromyalgia, and chronic tinnitus are all associated with central disturbances in processing different stimuli, hinting at network disorders involving sensory networks and large-scale networks managing attention and emotional processing. These disorders overlap clinically and epidemiologically, with migraine serving as a common link due to its multisensory hypersensitivity.

Structural and Functional Brain Changes in Migraine

Sait Ashina et al.

Summary: Individuals with migraine exhibit structural and functional changes in the brain, including white matter abnormalities, silent infarct-like lesions, and volumetric changes. Neuroimaging studies have helped characterize these changes, but limitations such as small sample sizes and poorly defined control groups exist.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the characteristics of MDDS patients with vestibular migraine, finding that patients with vestibular migraine tend to be more disabled in terms of age, severity of dizziness, job impact, and number of symptoms compared to those without vestibular migraine, but they have good potential for improvement with migraine prophylactic treatment.
