New phenalenone derivatives from the Hawaiian volcanic soil-associated fungus Penicillium herquei FT729 and their inhibitory effects on indoleamine 2,3-dioxygenase 1 (IDO1)

Jae Sik Yu et al.

Summary: Phenalenone derivatives sourced from fungi have diverse chemical structures and potential bioactivities. In this study, three new phenalenone derivatives were isolated from a Hawaiian soil fungus and their structures were determined. Compound 1 and compounds 5-7 exhibited inhibitory activity against IDO1, indicating their potential as anticancer immunotherapeutic agents.

Diversity and antimicrobial activities of culturable actinomycetes from Odontotermes formosanus (Blattaria: Termitidae)

Yanhua Long et al.

Summary: In this study, actinomycetes were isolated and purified from the combs of the fungus-growing termite Odontotermes formosanus. The type and quantity of actinomycetes were found to be positively correlated with the activity range of the termites. Some strains exhibited antimicrobial activities, such as Grincamycin N from Streptomyces lannensis, which displayed antibacterial activities against Staphylococcus aureus and Micrococcus tetragenus. These results confirm that the actinomycetes associated with O. formosanus are important sources of new active substances.

GNPS-Guided Discovery of Madurastatin Siderophores from the Termite-Associated Actinomadura sp. RB99

Seoung Rak Lee et al.

Summary: This study analyzed whether Actinomadura sp. RB99 produces siderophores that are responsible for the observed antimicrobial activity in co-cultivation experiments. Through mass spectrometry and natural product analysis, five madurastatin derivatives were identified, including four new derivatives. The structures and absolute structures of these derivatives were confirmed using various experimental techniques and analysis methods.

Comparative evaluation of bioactive phytochemicals in Spinacia oleracea cultivated under greenhouse and open field conditions

Bum Soo Lee et al.

Summary: This study used a metabolomic approach to comparatively analyze the phytochemical contents of spinach cultivated under greenhouse and open field conditions. The results showed that open field-cultivated spinach had higher nutritional value and contained more health-promoting phytochemicals. These findings are important for vegetable processors, dieticians, and consumers in selecting high-quality green leafy vegetables.

Ginkwanghols A and B, osteogenic coumaric acid-aliphatic alcohol hybrids from the leaves of Ginkgo biloba

Kwang Ho Lee et al.

Summary: Ginkgo biloba, known as a living fossil, has been historically used in traditional medicine and food. Two new coumaric acid-aliphatic alcohol hybrids, ginkwanghols A and B, isolated from G. biloba leaves, show the potential to promote osteogenic differentiation in mouse mesenchymal stem cells.
