Selective killing of cancer cells by silica nanoparticles due to increased nanoparticle internalization and cellular sensitivity to oxidative stress

Peng Wang et al.

Summary: Silica nanoparticles (SNPs) exhibit higher cytotoxicity to various cancer cells than normal cells, but the underlying mechanisms are not fully understood. In this study, we found that SNPs triggered higher cytotoxicity in human hepatoma HepG2 cells than normal L-02 cells. More SNPs were taken up and accumulated in the mitochondria of cancer cells, and remained in cancer cells even after the removal of free SNPs from the culture medium. SNPs also induced higher ROS generation and lower intracellular GSH content and CAT activity in HepG2 cells compared to L-02 cells.

Effect of SiO2 on PSF/PF127 nanocomposite mixed matrix membrane for the separation of oil-water emulsion

Gomathy Nainar Manikandan et al.

Summary: In this study, a PSF/PF127/SiO2 nanocomposite ultrafiltration (UF) membrane was prepared by incorporating synthesized SiO2 nanoparticles and PF127 into PSF to enhance antifouling properties. The membrane exhibited enriched permeation, better rejection, and excellent recyclability in the separation of oil wastewater.

Comparative Characteristics of the Structure and Physicochemical Properties of Silica Synthesized by Pyrogenic and Fluoride Methods

Mirtemir Kurbanov et al.

Summary: This paper presents a comparative analysis of the properties of highly dispersed silicas synthesized by pyrogenic and fluoride methods. The structure and surface properties of the synthesized samples were characterized using multiple methods. The results showed that all the samples exhibited similar characteristics regardless of the synthesis method. Additionally, the method of synthesis and the raw materials significantly influenced the BET surface area and pore volume of the samples.

Application and perspectives of nanopesticides in agriculture

Yanru Ding et al.

Summary: Nanopesticides, with sizes typically less than 100 nm and large relative surface area, have been an important application of nanotechnology in agriculture for the past 20 years. While they have shown great potential in pest and disease control, their toxicological effects and environmental behavior need further investigation. In this study, we discuss the characteristics and applications of five nanopesticide formulations, analyze their behavior and ecotoxicity in the environment, and explore the issues in risk assessment and management. Despite challenges, nanopesticides deserve further study and show promising prospects for development.

Experimental investigation of hydrophobic and hydrophilic silica nanoparticles on extended surfactant properties: Micro-emulsion, viscosity, and adsorption behaviors

Pattamas Rattanaudom et al.

Summary: The novel applications of nanoparticles and surfactants were studied for improving chemical oil recovery performance. Different concentrations and surface characteristics of hydrophobic and hydrophilic SiO2 nanoparticles were tested in a binary surfactant system. The results showed that the type and concentration of nanoparticles influenced microemulsion phase behavior, interfacial tension, and solution viscosity, which ultimately led to improved oil recovery with a recovery efficiency of 88% OOIP.

Environmental Method for Synthesizing Amorphous Silica Oxide Nanoparticles from a Natural Material

Vahid Zarei et al.

Summary: This study proposes an environmentally friendly and simple method for synthesizing amorphous silica oxide nanoparticles using agricultural waste rice husks, avoiding the use of toxic and expensive chemical materials. The method offers the advantages of fast, simple operation, controllability, high purity of nanoparticles, and low manufacturing cost. The non-toxic amorphous silica nanoparticles with 94.5% purity and particle size less than 100 nm were successfully synthesized without the use of any chemical material.
