Recent Advances in Surface Modifications of Elemental Two-Dimensional Materials: Structures, Properties, and Applications

Junbo Chen et al.

Summary: The development of graphene has allowed for the exploration of two-dimensional materials, which are considered revolutionary. Graphene possesses unique physical and chemical properties due to its geometric structure. Single-element-based 2D materials (Xenes) have also garnered significant interest, with 16 different Xenes currently explored. While two Xenes have not been synthesized, other Xenes have been successfully created through artificial design and synthesis. Surface modifications of Xenes have been investigated to tune their electronic, optical, mechanical, and chemical properties, broadening their applications in diverse fields.

Tuning the electronic properties of molybdenum di-sulphide monolayers via doping using first-principles calculations

Akhtar Hussain et al.

Summary: Doping of X-atoms in monolayer MoS2 can effectively modulate the structural and electronic properties, resulting in smaller band gaps and different conduction types depending on the dopant site and substituted atom. This study provides valuable information on the nature of doping and its potential applications in semiconducting electronic devices. The findings can also be applied to tune the electronic and optical characteristics of other 2D transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) for more efficient electronic devices.

First principles study of the effect of uniaxial strain on monolayer MoS2

ChengYue Wang et al.

Summary: The effects of uniaxial strain on the binding energy, band structure, and optical properties of monolayer MoS(2) were investigated. The results showed that monolayer MoS2 exhibited elastic behavior after applying strain, transforming the band gap from direct to indirect. The band gap decreased with increasing strain. Strain mainly affected the optical properties in the low-energy region. The optical properties of the material were significantly improved by strain.
