Synthesis of a novel borate ester Anion-Nonionic surfactant and its application in viscosity reduction and emulsification of heavy crude oil

Yingwei Si et al.

Summary: In this study, a boron-containing anionic-nonionic surfactant (SYW) was synthesized and used for emulsification viscosity reduction research on Xinjiang heavy oil. SYW showed a viscosity reduction rate of 97.3%. By compounding SYW with oleic acid and ethanolamine, the resulting surfactant SYG further improved the viscosity reduction rate to 98.6%. Both SYW and SYG significantly reduced interfacial tension and improved the dispersion of the emulsion.

Controllable regulation of emulsion stability by a pH-responsive zwitterionic/anionic surfactant system

Hairong Wu et al.

Summary: A pH-responsive zwitterionic/anionic surfactant system was proposed to improve crude oil recovery and achieve rapid demulsification of produced fluid. By adjusting the pH value, the interaction between surfactants could be controlled, allowing effective modulation of emulsification and demulsification states. The study demonstrated that varying the molar ratio of EAB to SDS and pH values could significantly impact the stability and droplet size of the emulsion.

Toranj Telmadarreie et al.

Summary: Thermal oil recovery techniques enable the commercial production of heavy and extra-heavy crude oil, but they also generate water-in-oil emulsions during production and transportation. The high stability and viscosity of these emulsions pose a challenge to the oil industry. This paper reviews recent strategies for demulsification of water in heavy oil/bitumen emulsions and discusses future opportunities for demulsification techniques and the potential of other methods to enhance separation performance.

Joseline G. Torres-Martinez et al.

Summary: In this study, a thermo-responsive hydrophobically associative water-soluble terpolymer was prepared and evaluated for polymer flooding of heavy crude oil from a carbonated reservoir in southern Mexico. The terpolymer was synthesized and characterized, and its steady shear viscosity was determined at different concentrations and temperatures. The results showed that the terpolymer exhibited good reduction in surface tension and adsorption capacity for the crude oil, and the polymer solutions had a certain recovery rate for the crude oil.
